    Movies to stimulate the mind.....

I've grown really tired of the 'pop' movies. So I started to add some 'classics' to my collection. Now my tastes aren't exactly mainstream, but some of you may enjoy these.....

    In the house:

"KOYAANISQATSI" This is the most stunning film I've ever seen. A visual feast (true example of a "motion picture") and a amazing workout for anyone's sound system. No dialogue, sound track by Phillip Glass. This movie is where the technique of a entire day passing being compressed into a couple of minutes was invented. The movie itself is a stunning social commentary of American society, (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

    Recently received:

"Dersu Uzala" -directed by Akira Kurosawa, Acadamy award for best foreign language film 1975. Filmed in Siberia, absolutely beautiful visuals,

    On order:

"Dodes 'ka-den" -directed by Akira Kurosawa A very quirky village in the middle of a garbage dump (Tokyo slum). A visual feast with surreal visuals and characters.

    More to come........

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I have KOYAANISQATSI on DVD, and I was mesmerized by the cinematography and music, but it's definitely a different pace and perspective than most films.
So I'd say that it's better as a DVD rental than a purchase for most people who haven't yet seen the movie.

I also have the movie CHRONOS on DVD which was directed and photographed by Ron Fricke (who shot KOYAANISQATSI) and it's only 40 minutes long and also a treat for the eyes and ears.

      Dean,

Glad to know another fan of Ron Fricke's amazing camera work.

BARAKA is another film he shot. It's a stunning visual spectacle in the same vein as CHRONOS.

Words alone are incapable of capturing the essence of these beautiful movies

And you're certainly correct, KOYAANISQATSI isn't for the short attention span possessed by most of the MTV generation.

Unfortunately, netflix doesn't have the above films :M . However, they do have "Seven Samurai" by the same director. Have either of you seen this film. If so, does it follow the same imagination as the above mentioned film?

John I haven't seen the films mentioned above, but I have seen The Seven Samurai and I am sure you will like it. It is what the American film THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN was based on. Both were great films.

Thanks George. I enjoyed the Magnificent Seven. So, I'll add this to my queue.
