If you felt Michael Bays Young-Hollywood-actors-go-to-war Pearl Harbor was a disappointment and/or picture and sound quality of the late Battle of Britain sucked, here's one for you:

DARK BLUE WORLD (Columbia TriStar)

Made by the Czechs (our neighbors) this is an authenticity driven war movie about Czech volunteers aiding the Royal Air Force in WW II.

I can't help but notice Jan Sverak (the director) must have disliked Pearl Harbor a lot - he borrowed a lot of plot ideas - and executed them ten times better.

And for those of you more interested in impressive sights & sounds: the dogfights over England between British Spitfires and German Messerschmitts are not only impressive - the production crew came up with some spiffy new choreography and effects to make you feel what it is beeing inside a fighter plane.

Misleading title, great movie - I suggest you rent or buy it, NOW!

I just watched a preview of this film at Netflix. It does not appear to have any subtitles onscreen. However, english subtitles are available in it's menu.

I was recommended to see Dark Blue World by some online HT friends, and I was very pleased with the movie. It told a very similar story to Pearl Harbor with a love triangle, but it told the story of Czech pilots in WWII, and didn't take the Hollywood license and bend the facts to make the main characters seem more heroic as Pearl Harbor did.
Also the characters and story development in Dark Blue World was MUCH more believable, talking about the people's struggles, more than so much flag waving and special effects explosions.
But being more realistic, it's not a particularly "happy" film. Just good.

Another interesting movie about WWII was Enigma, and the British intellegence efforts to decrypt Germany's famous and ingenious encoding machine. It's an interesting mystery mixed with a love story, and makes a good rental (along with Dark Blue World).

Being a Columbia/Tristar DVD, the picture quality is very good, and it has a DD 5.1 audio mix in both English and Czech, and English subtitles (which is how I watched the movie).
