A screen giant is gone--Peter O'Toole died earlier today

One of the greats is no longer with us. Peter O'Toole, 81, died earlier today after a long illness (no specifics I could find, nor are they necessary).

Apart from the obvious--Lawrence of Arabia--which O'Toole performance stands out to you? Lion in Winter is a favourite of mine. I also have a soft spot for his voice acting in Ratatouille as the mean restaurant critic, Anton Ego (a wonderful name for a character). Won't have time to watch Lawrence tonight as a tribute, but perhaps I can squeeze in a viewing of Ratatouille with the kids.

    Thoughts?

I must admit to not having seen many of his performances, but his performance in Creator has to be one of my all time favorites.

That is another favourite of mine. The movie has its flaws but it is well done. I often use a line from that film with my students (though I'm probably not getting it exactly right as it's been over 20 years since I last saw it--guess I'm long overdue): "How would you like 12 credits in…The Big Picture."

He was a great actor. Aside from the movies mentioned here, one of my favorites is Lord Jim.

          - Man of La Mancha

          - Goodbye, Mr. Chips

          - The Lion in the Winter

          - Becket

However, I think many will feel that his greatest achievements were on the stage, the prodigious amount of his work there being his most beloved & memorable.

Most probably bypassed it but, I love quirky films like this. O'Toole's tabloid journalist, is a character so out there, you have to love it.
