    Zulu, Finally

Browsing through the reviews at Blu-Ray, I came across a review of the British release of IMHO one of the greatest movies ever made, Zulu. Now, any fan of the film that tried to get a copy on standard DVD in the US knows that it's been released several times in that format and none of those had good PQ or SQ. Thank you MGM. This version of the Blu-Ray (from Paramount UK) seems to have turned the trick and in a pretty spectacular way - at least according to the reviewer (I'll leave the descriptions to him).

I couldn't help myself. I went searching and found it's available for the US market through Amazon and ordered one immediately. If you are thinking about doing the same be warned, it's at a pretty stiff price point.

I'll pass along my impressions as soon as I get it. Now, where's the UPS guy?

Thx, Tex. Added to my Netflix queue to try first.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

Yeah, I have the MGM dvd and the transfer is leass than what it should be for such a great classic. The same can be said for Who'll Stop The Rain, another MGM classic release on dvd that stinks. I wasn't aware that ZULU was available on Blu-ray, so thanks for the heads up, Tex.

Since "Zulu Dawn" was a prequel to "Zulu", and given the way a number of other films originating a "series" have been relabled for home video to make it clear where they "fit" in sequence, I wouldn't be too surprised if I popped the BluRay disk in the player and saw "Zulu, Finally" on screen. :>)

Oh, I suppose I should have given a short description. . . ops:

Zulu retells the story of the 1879 battle at Rourke's Drift, Natal (now part of South Africa) between 140 British soldiers and engineers against almost 4,000 warriors from the Zulu tribe. It stars Stanley Baker, Michael Caine, Jack Hawkins, Ulla Jacobsson, and Patrick Magee with narration by Richard Burton.

Burke when you talked about Zulu Dawn I was thinking about that TV mini-series, not a "real movie". After going to IMDB I realize that I've never seen it. Thanks for the heads-up. It's #1 in my Netflix queue now.

I'll make this easy. For any fan of this film, this Paramount UK Blu-Ray is the only way you should watch it. Period. This release is BEAUTIFUL. The clarity and colors are magnificent throughout, and the detail is amazing for a film that is 46 years old. The audio is quite good also but not as much of an improvement as the picture is over any DVD version you've seen.

I could keep babbling along but won't. This release isn't cheap, but it is worth every cent.
