    ZULU revisited

I hadn't seen this in years. Actually haven't seen it since the theater release in the mid sixties. It has been on vhs tape and on a crummy Goodtimes dvd version that I reused to buy. Finally MGM brought out an excellent anamorphic widescreen version and I snapped it up.

It stars Stanley Baker and a very young Michael Caine. They share leadership of a small group of British soliders ( 100 I believe) who have orders to defend an outpost, (or garrison) against an advancing horde of Zulu warriors. The horde is actually 4000. Yikes.

Well how the British defend the garrison, using various battleground strategies, and the surprising outcome is well worth the 2 hours and 20 minutes viewing time. In fact the film just whizzes right along.

Awesome cinematography and very realistic battle scenes. Good transfer, too, considering the film's age. The mono DD sountrack is, well, just mono, but okay.

I'll be viewing this one again soon. :4:

George, it's good to hear that the MGM version has a good PQ. I've been holding off on this title waiting for someone to pass judgement on it. Glad it was you! Guess I'll have to swing by Best Buy on the way home and see if they have it lying about.

I keep hoping this excellent film will get the royal treatment it deserves with a high-quality video AND audio remaster. I'm just not sure if there are any applicable sources available to base them on.

This isn't reference quality, Tex, but it looks pretty darn good on an 8 foot screen. The sound could really use some work, though. Maybe someday Criterion will come out with the Royal treatment.
