Indeed June, it was certainly not what I expected, and I actually enjoyed the film as well, once I got past the "semi-animation". Grendel was truly a beast. However, I did hear someone say they didn't like the film, because it made Beowulf a liar instead of the hero and honorable man he truly was.
BTW, unfortunately, it's only available in HD-DVD format. However, I'm going to add it to my DVD collection.

I'll just be renting. There's been so many Beowulf versions I'm becoming wary. I have The 13th Tribe and Beowulf And Grendel in my collection and I prefer the latter.Comment

The latter part of last year my movie collection was pushing 2000 titles with half of them being VHS tapes. Some of these tapes were bought in the early eighties just after vcrs came out, and others were dubbed copies of rental tapes. There really was a lot of junk in there as well as close to a hundred... -
I don't know what it is about mafia type movies but I like them. I don't care for all the language but I can usually get past it. Sometimes they get a little gory but I suppose that's how the mafia worked (or works?). I suppose being a hillbilly I get a thrill out of seeing how they lived their lives... -
As you're all probably aware, the Criterion Collection puts out interesting titles across genres, periods and countries of origin--often being the only way to view a number of foreign titles. It is a North American focus (region locked) as it is a boutique licensee of films that have different arrangements... -
