    Deep Web (2015)

The deep web is an invisible part of the World Wide Web. Its contents are not indexed by standard search engines. The deep web is many hundreds of times the size of the visible web.

The title of this documentary is misleading because it isn’t really about the deep web but rather about Silk Road and its founder Ross Ulbricht. Silk Road was an online black market – best known as a platform for selling illegal drugs – that operated in the deep web. In 2013 the FBI shut down the Silk Road website and arrested Ulbricht who was eventually sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

I found the subject matter in this film very interesting. Ulbricht paid a heavy price for his crime. He didn’t receive a fair trial because he was a casualty of America’s war on drugs, if you believe what was said in the documentary. But hey, it’s a war you know, so the usual rules don’t apply, do they?

    Nigel.
