The Day the Earth Stood Still

I have not seen this yet so please don't give anything away, but I wanted some opinions if anyone has seen it yet. It looked pretty decent in the previews but I've heard a lot of bad things. Anyone seen it?

It's based on the 1951 original directed by one of Hollywood's best directors of his time, Robert Wise. It starred Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe and Michael Rennie. I am sure the remake is a pale comparison to the original and from what I've read I for one will be passing on it. If you have nothing to compare it to, you may like the remake.

I don't pay attention to reviews as much anymore unless they are personal reviews from some of my buddies here haha. A lot of reviews I see are way to critical on things and generally I enjoy the movie a lot more then the review had me thinking I would. I do want to see this movie though.

Pass on it. All flash and no substance.

        Merry Christmas!!
Go ahead and follow that Yellow Brick Road...

Rotten Tomato's page for "us normal viewers' opinions" is rating TDTESS at 43%, where their "pro reviewers" have it at 20%. I'm still going to give it a spin when it's released as I like the premise (and the original A LOT), I like Keanu Reeves & Jennifer Connelly, and the special effects look decent. Besides, looking at anything in Blu-Ray makes it better. :

save your money and wait to rent it. NOT worth $10 to view. The best parts are what you see in the add.

Yeah, I shouldn't say I'll pass on it. It would likely be worth a watch on Blu-ray as a rental, for Jennifer Connelly if for no other reason. Guess I may be related to Chris, too, Tex. :P

Perhaps a "family reunion" is in order--Jennifer Connelly in hi-def is always a "must see". :T

I am a little apprehensive about watching this one as I am a big fan of the original, when remakes of the classics are done, I am usually disappointed. One exception for me was War of the Worlds, which for me, captured the essence of the original.

Ok, family reunion it is. You guys bring Jennifer to my house, and I'll provide the popcorn, theater, drinks, food, and... well, ANYTHING else you want.

The best I ever had was in an out-of-the-way little restaurant in Rome called Domino's. We managed to eat there three times before leaving Rome. Their tortellini in alfredo sauce was absolutely to die for....

What a coincidence. We have restaurants all over Houston named Domino's. (And I wouldn't be surprised if someone might have died eating there.) :>)

Ah, Rome... I really enjoyed the vacation we took there many years ago. The city is like one big outdoor museum that is NOT encased in glass. And the food.... ohhhhhhhhhh.... to DIE for. Growing up, I always thought there was some good Italian food out there, like "The Olive Garden". Then I went to Italy for the 1st time, and discovered how wrong I had been. I'm not quite sure how we Americans can get real Italian food so very, very wrong. That, and Europeans are able to get away with some cooking ingredients there that we aren't. Soooooooo good.

When my wife and I were in Rome, we found a little gelateria that had the best Italian ice cream I've ever had. We went every night of the trip.

                                        Now my tummy's rumbling.

Paul, let me see if I can dig up any info that might have made it up here to the island. Unfortunately, it was 15-16 years ago.

Probably more interesting than the movie.... Flashy but what a bore, and I'm not one to be overly critical of a movie. Maybe I need to see it again.

Oh, and when in Rome, don't forget Caffe Sant'Eustachio for the best coffee in Italy! It's a big claim, but it's great coffee!

Oh, I could be wrong, but I reckon this is were Chris is refereing to for some fantastic ice cream!

Just that, I'm pretty sure that the difference between American and Italian/European preparation of the same dishes is more than just technique. Since foreign countries aren't governed by the FDA like the US is, (for better or worse) other countries can cook with things that have higher fat contents and such. So it ends up sooooooooooo good.

I could be totally wrong, though.

Sort of back on topic--I watched this movie last night in a local "theater". Not too bad, not excessively great. Keanu Reeves actually didn't do all that bad a job, for being an alien. Somewhat akin to his calm-demeanor Neo role. The one role I had a problem with, was Kathy Bates. Great actress, but I just don't see her as the national Secretary of anything, much less Secretary of Defense. Didn't fit.

Again, though, I'll watch anything with Jennifer Connelly.

I've got the original 1951 movie version in my Netflix queue.
