Directv now has new MPEG4 HD channels, the PQ is absolutely stunning with more HD channels to come in October. Here is what is available thusfar:

    202 CNN HD
    206 ESPN HD
    209 ESPN2 HD
    212 NFL HD
    220 BTN HD
    245 TNT HD
    247 TBS HD
    265 A&E HD
    267 SMT HD
    269 HIST HD
    278 DSC HD
    280 TLC HD
    282 APL HD
    284 SCI HD
    362 TWC HD
And several movie channels, Starz, HBO, Showtime

Just thought I would keep everyone informed. Anyone else have DTV and experiencing these new non-lite HD channels?

    Peace and blessings,

    No, but wish I did!

I thought MPEG4 was supposed to do even more compression, though, giving not as good video quality. No?

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

Yes, it does more compression but at a lower datarate (~1/11th the size of MPEG2), therefore providing better video quality at a lower data rate . I am not familar with the algorithms and encoding, but here is a quick synopsis of some of the improvements vs MPEG2.

      1. Independent encoding of pictures and video
      2. Increased encoding efficiency, more efficient compression of pictures, video and textures
      3. Multi variable resolutions
      4. Scalable complexity
      5. Extended error correction
      6. Increased flexibility for object-based encoding
      7. Small buffer delay
      8. Global Motion Compensation (GMC)
      9. Content-dependent scalability of textures

I have actually compared the MPEG2 and MPEG4 picture of the same video and there is a significant difference in PQ quality, of course this is dependent upon the carrier's signal. Smithsonian HD, CNNHD, TWC are just outstanding. Hope this helps.

      Peace and blessings,

Do you need the new 5-LNB dish for these, or just the new receiver?

I read in another forum that some are saying the video quality is as good as FIOS TV. I don't have DTV anymore to judge for myself.

All I can say is FINALLY DTV is coming through on what they promised.

You will need the 5-LNB dish, Slimline or AT-9, as well as a new receiver (HR-20 100/700, or H-20) with the BBCs attached to receive the Ka signals.
