    Miami Vice

    Hello All,

I'll give it a C+. I don't remember the show, but my friends that was fans of the show really hated the film.

Ah... I grew up when it was on TV, but we lived in a place at that time where we didn't get TV reception, so I hardly saw any of the actual show.

The tiny little ads I've seen for this movie look really good, actually, and really dark. Sorry to hear that people aren't liking it, though. I'll go take a look at Rotten Tomatoes.

Probably those who don't like it are hardcore fans of the tv series. Mann does a different take on the film version. Rather than the bright pastel colors and daytime scenes of Miami in the series, the movie apparently is darker, with more action happening at night. Also, tv series fans seem to have a hard time accepting Farrell and Foxx over Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
I'm going to wait for the dvd. I will definitely buy it because anything Michael Mann does is okay with me.

Michael Mann does movies a certain way. If you aren't a fan of Heat or Collateral, this probably won't be your kind of movie. Fortunately I am, and I liked it quite a lot. The movie is definitely darker and grainier.

Ah, I didn't know he did those movies. Collateral wasn't bad, and Heat was really good.

I still think Heat sets the example of best urban warfare scene.

Other films directed by Mann include:

            The Keep
            Thief
            Ali
            The Insider
            The Last Of The Mohicans
            Manhunter

The last two of the above are real favorites of mine. He also wrote the screenplay for some of the above.

Interesting. Yeah, I really liked "Last of the Mohicans" too. I was a kid when it came out, and bought the soundtrack. Can't remember who wrote the music, but it was some good stuff.

I don't know the writer either, but I really get into it during the chase scenes near the conclusion when the music has that driving fiddle ( and I don't usually like fiddles). Ahhh, Mann really knew how to meld music with his tv and film works.

I will end up buying the DVD and may get out to the theater, but that doesnt happen often.

Currently in the middle of season two box set.

The Last Of The Mohicans soundtrack was a collaberation between Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman.

Trivia question for you, George: What well known actor today played a small part as a bartender in Thief?

(Probably should've put this in the movie trivia thread but since this has kinda turned into the Michael Mann thread, what the heck!)

Apart from the opening scene, it was a horrible movie. I saw it in the theatre and the sound sucked; you could hardly hear the dialogue. If your thinking of taking a trip down memory lane, all of you will be greatly disapointed.

                                  by George Bellefontaine
I have yet to be disappointed by anything Michael Mann has attempted, but what I really like about Mann is his choice of musical soundtracks. Like Heat and Last Of The Mohicans, COLLATERAL has a killer track.

As everyone probably knows by now, the movie stars Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx and...

Well, tonight I finally sat down and watched the whole movie (ive tried 2 other times since last tues)

And I still dont know what to think...
Dark and grainy, unlike the series. The way it was shot and the pace made me think I was watching a 2.5 hr TV show, not a movie. Even though...

                                  by Chris D
This may be a good discussion. The topic is popular books that have been made into movies. By and large, my personal opinion is that movie renditions of good books fall far short for a few reasons. First, I think due to the media of print, books allow for a much more thorough immersion of the reader...

There is an unrated director's cut of director Tony Scott's film REVENGE, starring Kevin Costner, Anthony Quinn and Madeleine Stowe available now. I picked it up and watched it last night. It replaced an old vhs tape so it was nice to see the film again in its 2:40 aspect ratio. For anyone who hasn't...
