I took my RSP-1066 over to a friend's place and hooked it up with his Bryston 4B-ST and the rest of his equipment.

Now I don't know what's wrong, but the processor is adding an echo into whatever we're listening to. Digital/analog it doesn't seem to matter...very strange. There isn't any DSP applied is there? How does Rotel handle analog inputs? Straight out to analog output, or does it do A/D/A?

And a separate issue...I have two RB-1080s in my posession, both of which create buzzing noises in my speakers...in both my systems. Are they also plagued by ground loop problems, or is this something else?

Just a thought - some CD/DVD players have DSP - it wasn't accidentally turned on there?

That's extremely strange...how did do when you connected the CD players analog cables to the multi channel input?

It's probably his system, as I had no problems whatsoever with the pre/pro.

My concern more is about these RB-1080s that I have. This hum has me worried. Andrew, I've e-mailed you privately about it, but if anyone else has had a smiliar problem with their 1080, I'd love to hear about what it might be.

The test for this is to unplug everything from the amplifier except the speakers and have the amplifier plugged straight into the wall. If with no input and plugged straight into the wall the hum goes away, then you have ground loop hum from somewhere (usually coming in thorough the RCA leads from the pre-pro from somewhere like a satellite or TV or cable antenna (Sometimes coming in through the ground pin itself in the mains from another component). In which case follow the normal (well documented) ground loop isolation techniques.

Ok, that's my scenario. It only hums when I connect it to my pre/pro. I don't have CATV or Satellite in my HT though. And it's happened on two very different systems, with different cables and everything. More ideas on what to do please.

Drew do you have your pre/pro connected to the amp via coax or optical? If coax try changing to optical and see what happens. When I was having my hum problem with my 1095, I could solve it by using the optical cable. Though once I hooked up my sub the problem reappeared. Turns out in the end the 1095 had to be repaired(5 input resistors replaced).

Problem solved. Took it to a friend's house yesterday, had no problems with it there using the regular 3 prong cord...figured it was my electricity at my place. I found a power cable that had a two prong male end (wall receptacle), but was three prong on the female (amp) end...a "cheater" cable I think it's called.

Swapped out the 3 prong cord for that one, problem gone.

To whoever suggested the cheater plug idea (I know I read it somewhere here), I owe you a beer...or two...thanks.

Did you try the optical cable if your using a coax to see if it solved the problem? Using a cheater plug will void any warranty you have. Void your insurance if a fire is caused by the unit. And possibly hurt some one.

Try a good mains filter with filters for active, neutral and ground and separate backs for different plugs. I have found that this will remove certain types of hiss and hum that otherwise require cheater plugs. (worked for my Rotel 1080 as well as subwoofers). The overall effect of these filters will also clean up the sound of everything - since it removed a lot ao "gunk" that can be causing problems. I'm in Australia so what works for our 240V won't work for you - but most good dealers will let you take one home and return it - so you can see what works for you... They also provde surge protection etc for your equipment...

A mains filter is a device that takes the 110, 220 or 240V mains supply from you wall socket and filters out any noise (higher frequencies than the 5o or 60Hz supply, spiks etc). Good ones will also isolate any ground currents / nise etc. The aim is to deliver each device a clean signal and eliminate any noise causing hiss, video interference etc. Try a post in the Audio or Home Theater forums of this guide using a title like "Recommendations on Mains Filters" and ask what people use and you will get some suggestions...
