Use of multi-channel inputs on 1098

I decided to keep my 1098 and bought an OPPO 95 so that I could listen to lossless codecs. Problem is that I cannot get my rear back channels to work. I don't know if the 1098 only supports a 5.1 analog input even though it appears to have inputs on the back for the center back channels. Anyone have a similar set up and that can guide me through this would be great. I will not be happy if I now have to replace this 1098 after my awesome Blu-ray upgrade.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Hmmm.. Not to start the tech support at level 1, but do you have the rear channels enabled?
    Main System:

    Emotiva UMC-1
    Emotiva UPA-2
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Yes I do. When I run the test tone when other inputs are on I can hear them. Shows on the 1098 screen that they are on but no sound. Of course when the multichannel inputs are selected then I cannot run a test tone from the 1098. When I run the test tone from the OPPO again no sound from the back channels.

That is very strange.. It should work.. Using the multichannel inputs is just a thoughput with volume control. What goes in must come out...

Well unfortunately it appears that the center back inputs are not working on my 1098. I think I will try Rotel tech support otherwise looks like I will be forced to replace my 1098 after all.

Are you referring to the rear channels or the 2 Centre Back Channels?

You are choosing the "multi input" selection when you play the Oppo correct?

Might also need to check the OPPO setup to ensure they are enabled there. See page 67 and up in the OPPO manual.

I will double check the manual although I think I set it up correctly. A number of months ago I did try a SAMSUNG player and had the same problem. I took it back thinking that it was defective as a number of other things were not working on it.

Did you try plugging the front outputs of the oppo into your rear channel inputs to see if you hear anything.

I have a similar setup and you will only hear sound if it is decoded from the sound track. If it is not 7.1 recording I think the oppo will not output anything on those channels. It does not up mix to 7.1 i think????

Thanks Luca! I tried your suggestion and when I plug the fronts from the Oppo into the center back channels of the Rotel I can hear the tracks so therefore it is not my Rotel that is having issues.

I think I will have to go to an OPPO users forum because when I go through the OPPO test tones all I get is sound from my other 5.1 channels and no test tone for the back surrounds.

Havn't a clue about your OPP0 95. But you could try reversing my test and pluging the rear oppo outs to the front in on the Rotel. Making sure to use a known good pair of RCA's

Yes I did try yesterday but no luck. The good news is my Rotel is working fine. Looks like I will need to exchange the OPPO.

The Oppo is a serious piece of equipment and has a big menu with piles of options!. Make sure you study the manual carefully and insure that you do not have something set up incorrectly before you return it. Just my 2 cents!! :-)

I don't own an Opo 95, but I suspect the problem is the oppo is acting as a passtrough, and when the rotel does the same, you obviously will get no sound in the surround back channels when playing a movie with a 5.1 soundtrack (basically all of them).

To troubleshoot try playing a movie, DVD or Bluray, with a 6.1 or a 7.1 soundtrack, and hear what happens.

I think he has been running the speaker setup utility in 7.1 in which case the OPPO should identify each channel with pink noise...

That is exactly what I have been doing. I have contacted OPPO tech support. As I said earlier the good news is that the 1098 is not the problem.

mpauline, I don't know if you have tried this, but some time ago, it happened to me, that I had in the speakers configuration of the Oppo, the downmix to stereo and I could not hear but the front channels. Try to change it to 5.1 or 7.1 and see if it works. (may be 7.1 as you have it as center back channels).

                                      Regards

Thanks Stu for posting the update. I already had the firmware downloaded but it required me to do a system default reset to get it working.
