    1068 analog multi-channel bass management

I'm having a brain freeze... do the analog multi-channel inputs on the 1068 go through the bass management/crossover/delay processing? Under "MULTI Inputs" the manual says...

"These inputs bypass all digital processing in the RSP-1068 and are routed directly to the Volume control and preamp outputs."

...which I took all this time to mean I should do bass management in the dvd player. Now I think I might be mistaken.

Does "digital processing" include bass management and delay?

Asides from the selectable 100hz bass redirect to the sub, there is nothing done to the signal.

The "Multi Input" setting within Subwoofer Setup also impacts bass reproduction from the multi-channel analog inputs. This is particularly important because with many source devices (DVD and Blu-ray players) the analog LFE output is intentionally reduced by 10dB to ensure that the dynamic range of the signal doesn't exceed the bandwidth that the analog connection can handle. If you don't compensate for this reduction in the pre/pro, your X.1 channel sound will be severely lacking in bass. On my RSP-1068, I have to set the Multi Input subwoofer setting to MAX (+10 dB) to get the proper bass level.

This is the so-called "-10dB LFE bug", even though it's technically not a bug. (See this thread on AVS Forum http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748147 for a full explanation.)

So if I read this right the Dolby Digital 5.1 dvd's when using hdmi and bit stream do not need a 10db boost as when the pre/amp decodes it it knows to do the boost automatically. So my 1069 pre would take care of it?

I don't have a 1069, but a properly functioning pre/pro will automatically handle this issue through its digital inputs. That is, unless the pre/pro has a bug in its firmware, you only have to worry about the -10dB issue when using the multi-channel analog inputs. Complicating the issue further is that SACDs are not recorded with the -10dB adjustment to their subwoofer channels, and different players handle that differently through their analog outputs. So if you're using multi-channel analog and switching back and forth between DVD/Blu-ray and SACD discs, with some players, you need to manually adjust the LFE boost in the pre/pro every time you switch. (There's no way for a pre/pro to know automatically whether or not it should apply a correction to its multi-channel analog inputs. However, digital audio streams includes format information that the pre/pro can interpret.)

The first post in the thread on AVS Forum that I referenced in my previous post has a list of how some specific pre/pro models on the market handle the 10dB adjustment, but the Rotel models are not listed.

I've been calibrating my Oppo BDP-83 this week using analog out to the multi-inputs of my RSP-1066. Does it matter that using an spl meter tells me to set the sub trim to -2 in the Oppo setup menu for 75 db? Should I just set the sub trim to "0" and then set the multi-input level to "max" in the 1066?

The correct settings depend on how the Oppo player handles LFE output.

Here's the basic sequence of speaker level settings I suggest:

                1. Adjust speaker settings for front, center, and surround levels using Rotel 1066 test tone menu.
                2. Adjust the controls on your subwoofer's own amp to produce the same dB level as the other speakers using the test tone from the 1066.
                3. Using the multi-channel inputs from the Oppo and the Oppo's test tones, adjust front, center, and surround speaker level settings in the Oppo's menus.
                4. Still using the Oppo's test tones, adjust the Oppo's sub trim and/or the "Multi Input" setting in the 1066's Subwoofer Setup to produce same dB level as the other speakers. (At this point, DO NOT adjust the subwoofer's own controls to get the levels to match, otherwise you'll be chasing your own tail trying to figure out why the bass isn't right from one input or another.)

Mark, are there test tones in the Oppo?
Or did you use a calibration disk?, if so , which one did you use?
                    Thanks,
                    Rob

I used the Avia disc as the Oppo doesn't have tones.

Hey guys, what's the best way to connect a HDDVD player to the 1068 for the new lossless audio formats. I can use the analog out from the HDDVD to the analog inputs, but will the bass management settings in the 1068 apply (what about bass management settings in the player itself)? I guess I can always...

                          by Andrew Pratt
There seems to be a lot of talk lately on what bass management should or should not be doing. It also seems that there are a lot of assumptions being made about what, where and how this BM should be invoked. I came across a few links that are interesting and suggest that the problem isn't with X but...

                          Hi everyone,

                          Great forum!

I am having problems with bass not being strong enough (or muffled & not distinct or clear, boomy when levels turned up) when listening to certain cd tracks.

5CH seems to produce a lot more bass than 2CH stereo and sounds better....
