Andrew -
Sorry that I wasn't able to send this in earlier - have had trouble with my password.
I bought my Rotel RSP-1066 late August. I chose the Rotel because, in my estimation, it's the buy of century! That is balancing performance first - against price paid. I honestly believe that I would have to pay nearly $4,000 USD, for probably the Anthem, to get a truly better sounding processor.
I'm amazed how many people have forgotten that with the Rotel, they are paying less than 40% of the cost of the Anthem for a product that sonically holds its own.
I appreciate Club Rotel and the information and comments exchanged - your contributions have been extremely helpful to me.
All that being said, there are some things that I would like to see changed on the 1066 or a new "big brother" model. I hope some of the concerns can be rectified by way of updates.
First, a problem that Ive encountered -
For my V1 input for audio, I use the Optical 1 input for my DirecTV satellite audio, and I use an analog (Video 1 L&R) audio input for the playback of my S-VHS tapes.
I somehow get the satellite's audio also when I select Optical 2, Coaxial 1, Coaxial 2, Coaxial 3 and Analog. I have not idea why.
The satellite audio should only be available via Optical1!
Additionally, when I select Analog to hear the S-VHS audio, this audio is also present at Optical 2, and Coaxials 1,2 and 3.
This is wrong! This audio should only be available at Analog!
Next, the remote - which I basically enjoy, should have the V1 through V5 buttons located on the main panel - not hidden under the cover. I change inputs often and it's not very convenient to continually slide the cover open to access the needed buttons.
DELAYS - All settings should be via "Feet." Left and right front speakers should be included.
SPEAKER SET-UP - If "None" is chosen for Center Back, then "CB SPKR SEL: 1 SPEAKER" should no longer appear on the screen.
TEST TONE - There should be a way to set levels for each speaker with or without the test tones being activated. That would make life little easier for those of us who prefer to use a set-up DVD such as "Video Essentials." Also, all speaker settings should be adjustable in 1/2 db increments.
TONE CONTROLS - Currently in steps of 2 - I believe it to be 2 db increments - way, way too crude! They should be in 1/2 db steps.
I've had a problem when watching a Dolby 5.1 movie via satellite.
My default audio setting for watching TV is Pro Logic II - Cinema -
when I select a TV channel showing a 5.1 encoded movie, the processor currectly switches to Dolby Digital 5.1. The problem is when I change to a channel sending out 2 channel audio - the processor at times remains locked into Dolby Digital 5.1 - and therefore I get no audio, but most of the time, the Rotel will automatically choose 2 Ch audio, not the default Pro Logic II - Cinema. Something is wrong!
I would love to have had a wider video bandwidth to accomodate HD - when I bite the bullet.
I don't know what the above refinements/changes would cost. Again, I've gotten more than I paid for. I have no questions or problems concerning bass management since I using 5 NHT Super One Speakers (Small) and a Velodyne HGS-12 subwoofer. (I can understand the frustration of those owners who have a bass management problem and now learn that the Mute button issue is on Rotel's mind). My Rotel and the speakers are connected to a Marantz MM-9000 5 channel X 150 watts amplifier. I'm not only please, but sometimes stunned by the quality of the sound.
Andrew, thank you again. Both you and Mike at Rotel have been very helpful. In fact, I e-mailed Mike before I made the purchase with some questions - his interest and quick responses helped me in making my decision to buy the Rotel.
