Is Dolby PLII Music supposed to sound awful?

I dropped in a CD and immediately noticed that something didn't sound right (and that "awfulness" was coming from the rear speakers). Somehow, my RSP-1066 was in "Dolby PLII Music" mode.

I decided to do some investigation. I cut the output of the front left and right speakers as much as possible, and allowed Eminem's "The Eminem Show" play on. What I heard out of the rear channels is either a complete embarrasment for the Dolby PLII Music algorithm or Rotel's implementation of the algorithm.

Has anyone else listened to what comes out of the rear channels of the Dolby PLII Music setting? Am I going crazy, or does it sound genuinely distorted?

You sure that wasn't the source material

Seriously a lot of people claim that DTS:NEO sounds better then PLII...I haven't spent much time either since 95%+ of my time is spent in 2 channel

I knew I was going to get that, Andrew.

I just had never listened to it before, and today when I did, I was horrified. It was awful. I was like a fly intermittably buzzing around in the background. I was curious as to if the problem was with the algorithm or Rotel's software.

I also found DPL II (and DTS Neo 6 as well) at best average. I use mostly 2 chanel stereo and from time to time, when the quality of the disc is poor, Rotel DSP modes

A tip: if you want to use all speakers, try 5 (or 7) channel stereo ... sounds a lot better than any DSP-mode!

              RDC PLII Question
              by gladelson
I have owned a RDC-7 for several months and there is something that I haven't figured out. My unit came with the PLII and DTS-ES upgrade. In menus 3-5 and 3-6 you can set the Prologic II mode to either "Movie" or "Music" for those surround modes (2 channel). These settings appear...

All you with headphones but no Dolby Headphone Processing
              by Gordon Moore
Okay so the wife constantly tells you to put on the "cans" so as not to wake her or the kids. I like my headphones but I got a taste of the Dolby Headphone track on Perl Harbour and began my quest for a receiver that incorporated this algorithm. Well I settled on a Panny Digital Amp...but...

PLII vs DSP 5-ch on 1055
              by stewc
I watch a lot of SD video through my 1055 (analog cable channels, for example.) Two modes: through Tivo (analog audio to 1055) or Moto5100 STB (digital audio to 1055). In either case, I've been very disappointed with the 5-channel imaging of DD PLII Cinema -- seemed overly concentrated on the front-center...

New 9.1 channel Dolby Pro Logic IIz
              by Chris D
From a news release I just saw of the first receiver, (Onkyo) with the new Dolby Pro Logic IIz technology that extracts to 9.1 channels. I chased down this technology report on the Dolby website. Very interesting.
I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of this before! My thoughts in another post...

              1098 PLII - X Sound Steering Issues
              by Bing Fung
Lately I have been noticing my 1098 when playing Dolby PLII sources (TV, DVD) that the steering of the centre will wander over to the mains and surrounds breifly (.5-1 sec) every now and then. Or at least that s what it sounds like. The dialog audio will just quickly output into the surrounds, and...
