I would like to buy a stereo pre amp and im wondering which one to get. I only plan on hooking up a rotel RCD-1072 and two RB-1080's. Is the 1082 going to have any difference in all aspects of sound quality over the 1070?

Hi BWLover,
I upgraded from an RC-1070 to an RC-1082 thirteen months ago.
The advantages of the 1082 are:
• It has treble and bass tone controls. If you listen to perfect recordings then these are less necessary. If the quality of your recordings varies then they are very handy.
• It has a better remote control. The 1082 provides smaller volume increment and decrement. I had to adjust the 1070 manually at times to get exactly the volume I wanted.
• It has an AUX socket on the front. I haven’t actually used this yet but I’ll be ready when a friend thrusts an iPod into my hand.
• It has a slightly different sound. It’s a more pleasing sound, but that’s subjective and I didn’t do any simultaneous comparisons. However I haven’t missed the 1070.
Well there is one thing I miss. The 1082 has a 3.5mm headphone socket on the front and my headphones have a 6.5mm (1/4 inch) plug. The 1070 has a 1/4 inch socket.
A minor weakness of the 1082 is a low but audible pop from the speakers when the Tone button is disengaged. This type of fault confirms that Rotel’s aim is to provide an excellent sound but at a reasonably low price. Consequently there is less of a budget available for design, testing and rework than with more expensive brands.
In summary the advantages of the 1082 outweigh the disadvantages so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

I moved the RC-1070 into a second system and bought the RC-1082 for the main system. Along with Nigel's comments I noticed an improvement in 3-d dimensionality and overall clearness. I wrote this on a previous thread. I'd recommend the 1082.

Here is a review of the RC-1082 by by Chris Martens of The Absolute Sound.
Chris makes the following comment:
I must also mention that our RC-1082 exhibited one small glitch—namely, a tendency to emit audible “pops” when switching between inputs. Since every other Rotel component I’ve heard has exhibited noise-free switching, I suspect this anomaly is unique to our review sample, though it may be a point for prospective owners to bear in mind.
Obviously the pop migrated from the input to the tone control on my device!

From Rotel at CES, the new stereo stuff is actually new.Originally posted by bigburnerHi Kevin,
If I was a gambling man I'd bet that the only difference between the RC-1082 and the RC-1580 is the Bypass function. What do you think?
Nigel.

Several times recently I've experienced a sudden spike in volume from my system while listening at fairly low levels (volume knob at 8 o-clock position on preamp). I'm just listening, and suddenly the volume seems to jump to a maximum, louder than I ever listen at and making me fear for my speakers....-

by Jnorth1178I presently have the RC1070 and like it very much. Have the chance to get the discontinued RC1090 at good price. Will I see an appreciable sonic improvement in that upgrsde? Or, would you wait for the upcoming RC1082 and would anyone know at this point if the upgrade will mean better sound? I hear...-

by kitjvI had the opportunity yesterday to audition a pair of Paradigm Studio 100s with the Rotel RC1070/RB1070 preamp & power amp combination. My ears were very pleased. However, I am curious about the audible difference that the Rotel RC1082/RB1080 would make with these same speakers. Or maybe going with...-

by miketHi,
I just wanted to give a few comments on the RC-1082 that I obtained recently. I moved my RC-1070 to my bedroom system and replaced it with an RC-1082 in the main system.
1. Overall the difference is very noticeable, more so than I thought. I had figured that the weakest link...-

by gmusicDear Members,
I am looking for a new music system. I was wondering if RC1070 along with the RB1072 is a good combination or not. I also had a look at the RB1070 (130 Watt) and was wondering if that would go along with the pre-amplifier. 1070 is cheaper then the 1072, but does provide...-
