Newbie needs help with software upgrade RSP-1098

    Hello People,

I have just bought from a long time friend's RSP-1098. Currently, it has the firmware version 1.1.2.

What are the steps to upgrade the Eprom to the most current available or any advice to follow that I should take into consideration.

Also, what are the software updates? What do they and steps to updates this as well.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks everyone!

    Russ.

Read this page several times and then come back and ask any questions you still have:

      Thanks Kevin,

I am just unsure if I the Eprom update (all 4 of them?) first then the firmware. Once the Eprom is updated how do I know which firmware to use?

      Thanks.
      Russ.

You will still use the V1 firmware update. I believe it's 1.1.8. Once the Eprom updates are all done, then you can use the V2.2.3 update. The version 3 & 4 are different hardware models of the 1098 (more so with the parts that control the different designed 7" LCD panels).

Since your're coming from 1.xx, you need to install the 4 eeprom updates first, then go to the latest 2.xx firmware.

Don't put 2.xx on before the firmware updates, and don't put the latest 1.xx firmware after the eeprom updates..

Good luck! Let us know if you have any issues.

Great! So, just to verify. Put all 4 Eprom updates first then the firmware update using the 2.xx version?

Thanks a million! All went well, time to audition the unit tonight!

BTW, Called 4 Rotel retailers with service departements and they did not have a clue what I was talking about. I could not have done this without everyone's help!

                Thanks everyone!

                  Hello People,

It sounds great except for some odd sounds. This 1098 replaces my RSX 1055 and no
                  issues with the symptoms below.

Hooked up everything last night and I am getting a constant clicking\ploping sound out of my speakers not loud but audioable from 10ft away. It is not the relay clicking that i am referring to. This sound is coming from my speakers only when I "mute" the processor or sometimes in on the main menu on the dvd if not audio is present.

I turned off the DVD play and had just my 1098 on and my 2-1075 on. Clicking present on "mute" but as soon as I add any volume 2...Max - no clicking complete silence?

Any help or insight is appreciated.
                  Russ.

If you didn't do a factory default after the upgrades, start there. Sometimes you can get weird issues after an update and need to default it.

Also, is it all speakers or mainly your center channel? Your unit was an early build and most likely has the shielding issue the first run units had. Rotel added more shielding around the DSP board to get rid of noise on the center channel.

Rotel should be able to send you the shield if you don't have one at no charge. It's a retro fit that takes about 5 minutes to install (pending you can get to the back of the unit).

                      Hello Kevin,

I reset to default after the upgrade of the Eprom. However, I am uncertain if I set it to default again after the firmware upgrade. I will try it tonight.

As for the the sound it is from all speakers, not just the centre. but more louder from the fronts (L,R,C). This sheild kit do I get one? Should I go to the retailer or direct from Rotel?

                      Thanks,
                      Russ.

Generally direct from Rotel. I would first call them with your serial number and see if it shipped before or after they added them.

I am attempting to upgrade a 1098 from software version 1.1.1 to 2.x
I believe that I have to flash the firmware to do this.
There are 4 files on the Rotel web site to flash - Eprom data files 1 thru 4.
Can you please confirm the eprom addresses for the updates?

For the last couple of weeks my 1098 has been giving me an odd quirk in that it would seemingly loose the connection to a digital device and force me to refind it or just cycle the power on it. It also sometimes would send out a nasty digital noise if you were on a menu etc where no signal was coming...
