Dolby TrueHD/RSP-1068/Multi Input Help!!

Help needed for a novice please!! I have had my RSP-1068 for a year and love it. I have been using a standard DVD player and have connected my audio via a coaxial cable. I have a 5.1 speaker setup. Setup was easy: Video Input 1 is my DVD player with the input as coaxial 1. The default mode is Dolby Pro-Logic II Cinema. So far, so good. Now here's the problem:

I just bought a Panasonic Blu-Ray DVD that decodes Dolby True HD, etc. So to get the benefit of the HD sound, I ran RCA cables from the analog out of my Blu-Ray to the analog multi inputs on the 1068. Video Input 1 is my Blu-Ray DVD player with the input as analog. The default mode is bypass.

To get sound (and it sounds amazing) from the 1068, I must either press the Multi Input button on the front panel of the 1068 or after I turn the unit on toggle the "listen" setting to Multi Inputin the menu. When I toggle to the Multi Input on the menu I changed the vid input to Video 1 (this is the setting for the Blu Ray). When I do this, the front panel of the unit shows 7.1, the 7 speakers and an "A" in a red box. However, nothing seems to remain set.

Everything works great, but when I shut off the system and then come back to it later, on power up the front panel shows the "A" in a red box and the FL and FR speakers. I must either hit the Multi Input button on the unit or again toggle through the menu.

I must be making a very obvious mistake, but surely there must be a way for the unit on power up to be ready to play the analog sourced audio without a further toggling need. After 4 hours I am most perplexed!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the confusion is coming from the inputs. Multi-Input is a separate input then video 1. When you assign VIDEO 1 to ANALOG and BYPASS, you're setting video 1 to look at the stereo analog VIDEO 1 inputs and to not apply any sound fields to it.

Now, here's where the confusion comes in. The MULTI-INPUT by default is an audio only input. You have correctly assigned it to display the signal on the VIDEO 1 video inputs when you select MULTI-IN. The MULTI-INPUT is always bypassed sound.

So I would keep the coaxial cable from the BR player and set up VIDEO 1 to listen to it (so the 1068 can decode normal DD & DTS from regular DVD's). And then you will switch to the MULTI-IN input when you are watching a BR. You don't have to go through the menu, you can turn the unit on by hitting the MULTI-INPUT button on the front or holding the EXT button on the remote.

So in short, it's two different inputs that you've set to watch the same video.

what panny bd player did you buy? if it's the bd 30, the dolby true hd will only be decoded thru a processor via hdmi output.

i have a rsp-1068 & 1066 with 2 panny bd 30s. i use the coaxial output.
the bluray dvd sound rate is frackin amazing. i thought about getting into the new sound but can't give up my rotel.

i my play with the sound when the new panny bd50 comings out. it will decode the new sound internally.

remember you are not hearing true dolby hd with the panny bd30 & rotel rsp 1068. bluray does give you an amazing sound. much better than standard dvds.

The connection should be pretty straight forward. Simply connect the BD player using your component video connection and use any of the digital audio connections (toslink or 75 Ohm) to connect the audio. Your 1068 automatically pick the correct bitstream either dolby digital or DTS, if you have a 7.1 system the XS system of the 1068 will automatically send a downmix of the side channels to the rear ones. You cannot hear real Dolby HD or DTS HD but rather downmixes (happens automatically)of both formats.
I agree the sound is spectacular regardless.
I'm in the process of swapping my 1068 for a 1069 so as to take advantage of the discreet HD formats and to have have true 1080P throughput which can only be done through HDMI. The best you can do with your setup (and I must admit should be spectacular since that is my present setup) is 1080i (which maybe converted to P in your TV if so equipped) and 5.1 with pseudo 7.1 provided by the ROtel XS.
I'll let you know if upgrading to the 1069 is worth it since mine should arrive in a few days. Till then my new Sony BD player is sitting in its box waiting for my new processor. It will be easy for me to do a direct comparison since I will still have my HDDVD setup connected which be connected identically to yours since my 360 is not HDMI. I'll be rebuying my planet earth collection in blueray so I can make the best comparison.

To output 7.1 on regular DD & DTS, you really should be using PLIIx. XS copies identical information from the rear channels and then sends it out mono to the center rears. So it's only 6.1 and not very discrete.

Applying PLIIx on top of DD or DTS (hit the sur+ button then the right or left buttons) will take the rear signal and split it into 4 discrete channels for a true 7.1 output.

You can even add PLIIxM music processing ( a little more echo and ambiance) to DD & DTS music videos.
