    rotel popping?

I have a problem I'm hoping somebody will have an answer for. I have a Rotel rsp-1068 processor, and a rmb-1075 amp. They're about 4 years old. Starting about 4-5 months ago..... once a week or two I get a popping sound out of my speakers. The processor display then appears normal, but after the pop I have no sound. I then turn the processor off and back on again, and all is fine. This happens with multiple sources using optical cables for audio. Rotel says I should first update my software from v 1.1.3, which I figure is a good idea anyway. If something is wrong internally, I don't think a software update would be the answer. I'm hoping someone has heard of this before and may have more expertise than myself.

    Thanks,
    Eric

It IS either software related... which update the firmware and see what happens. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue and most likely a relay is tripping and causing the sound to go off (or the digital -> analog boards). Something like that would be causing the issue.

First and easiest step is to make sure the firmware is updated to the newest out there.

Your warranty is close to coming to an end - assuming you purchased new. If still under warranty take to a dealer to diagnose.

Talked to my dealer today. They thought it is a grounding issue, and that I should run a wire from the body of my processor and amp to the grounding outlet in the wall. Sounds odd to me since the processor has a grounding plug already, should already be grounded. Does this sound bogus or maybe another possibility? I will be updating the software like you said, but have to get the cable I need from Rotel. Just checked, I have about a year and a half left on warranty. Thanks both of you for your time.

Hmm, what country are you in? I've never seen a newer Rotel processor have a grounding plug.

I'm in the U.S. You're right Kevin, I was mistaking. The Rotel has a 2-prong plug.

I have experienced the same problem and have found that it only occurs when the amp gets very hot. We have a 1067 in a cupboard. Its fine in winter but in summer we have to leave doors open and place a fan in front of it. The popping stops within minutes. Try this. Hope it helps.

I've been leaving the cabinet open, I don't believe it's hot. I updated the software, and it has done it again. I will probably send it to Rotel for them to check out since it's still under warranty.

I have as of two weeks ago sent the unit in to Rotel. They're saying 4 weeks then return shipping time. Having not heard anything yet, I noticed my B&W sub makes a popping noise when I turn the fan on/off to the fireplace...!? Fireplace fan is grounded. I've never used the fireplace. I however, begin to wonder, could the sub be spiking somehow now and then causing the rest of my speakers to pop, and that causing my system to shut down? Nothing too fancy in a sub I don't think, compared to the processor. Lots more to go wrong in the processor. Isn't the sub just simple power? HELP!!!!

                  thanks. :M

Is the popping damaging to the gear is my concern??

I don't believe anything has been damaged. Just got it back from Rotel, so we'll see how it goes. They replaced digital board and changed relays in the power board. Hopefully that will do the trick.

                        Issue resolved

As a solution, Rotel has changed out the digital board. They also upgraded the relays from 2 amp to 5 amp as a free upgrade. Hopefully this will take care of the problem.... So far, so good.

I have that same problem. I thought it was just th heat. I am taking it to the service centre as well. Lucky you still have warranty.

I believe if I had to pay it would have been around $400, so that may be what they will charge you. $271.50 for the digital board, $90.50 for an hour of labor, assuming they do the same for you.
