Rotel has a new verison of the RSP-1098! About 1 month ago my 3 month old 1098 was having problems so my dealer asked rotel to ship them a replacement unit. When I got it home (I still had the old unit hooked up) and took it out of the box I noticed on the back panel that all the S-Video inputs were gone and replaced by HDMI inputs (3 in and 1 out). I called the dealer and they did not know anything about the change. Even the new manual make no ref. to the new HDMI inputs.

Yeah it was a running change to help extend the life of the model, since no replacement is coming just yet. The HDMI's are the only difference.
Rotel may offer an upgrade for older models next year.

Am I correct in saying that current 1098 users with s-vide connections to the 1098 should really hope that reliability issues won't compel them to replace their unit with the newer model? S-video VCRs and many sat boxes only have composite and s-video outs, not HDMI. I purchased a RVE 1060 and currently connect my sat box to the RVE, but still use the s-video input on the 1098 for VCR purposes to faciltitate dubbing VCR tapes to a DVD recorder. I would be really disappointed to lose that feature!Comment

It's just a different card with minor modifications to the main board, not a redesign on the unit. I'm sure if you requested it, you could get a new one with S-video.

So after all the non-hype that Rotel will not be releasing additional/replacement cards for the 1098, they have 'HAD' to do something due to holding back the next edition of processor!

I am really glad to see Rotel providing HDMI upgrade to existing 1098, I spend a load to purchase a whole Rotel top range gear and really hate to see my favourite pre-amp render obsolete. Thanks Rotel and hope it will make available in my country

I inquired about this with my dealer. It costs $300, supports only HDMI 1.1, and only passes video (therefore no new audio codecs).
You can get a standalone 5x1 HDMI switch for around $50-60 dollars.
Not worth it as an ugrade IMHO.Comment

I have trouble with the conversion possibilities of the RSP 1098.
I connected a Satellite decoder to the RSP via a SVideo (mini DIN Cable) . I then use a SVideo link from "Monitor OUT Svideo" to a HT 1000 Projector, it works fine ..no conversion.

My RSP-1098 has just started shutting down at random and before I unplug the thing and send it in for service, wondered if anyone had any useful hints?
