    rsx-1057 hdmi switching question

    Hi,

I'm thinking of picking up a 1057 but wanted to know if it can receive PCM 96/24 audio via HDMI from a hd-dvd player. I read some other post that the 1057 only does video switching but wasn't sure that meant that it just didn't decode dts-hd, etc.

I also wanted to know if the 1057 will output component and composite video connected to it out to my hdtv connected via hdmi.

SOrry if this question has been posted earlier. Its just that hdmi is now so confusing with all the new versions.

No the RSX-1057 will not do any audio decoding through the HDMI inputs. It is just a two in - one out switch for video only.

Also the RSX-1057 does not have any analog to digital conversion on the video side. It will transcode composite and S-video to component, but that is as far as it goes. If you go into the RSX-1057 with any analog video (non HDMI) you have to go out analog.

Sounds like you are in the market for a 1058!

Thanks for the info. What a bummer. Seems pointless to have hdmi if the receiver can't do audio.

I'd like to have the 1058 but its too expensive. To me, there are better values to be had around the $2k market and if I were serious enough to drop that much I'd just go separates.

If the 1058 was $500-600 cheaper then its a different story, I'll be saving up right now. But I digress. Thanks for the info and prompt replies guys.

There may be receivers that have more features than the RSX-1058 at $2000.00 US, but I don't think there is a better value. That price point is very competitive so you realy have to know what is more important to you in terms of features and sound quality (which is subjective) if you do spend that much money. Make sure you listen to any receiver before you make a final decision and you may find yourself coming back to the RSX-1057 or RSX-1058 because they sound that good in my opinion.

            :agree:

I don't have the professional background Eric does, but as a consumer and owner of a 1057, I totally agree. I had a quite a bit more expensive Yamaha receiver with more bells and whistles on it before I got my 1057. The 1057 is hands down a better sounding receiver and it doesn't have a bunch of stuff I'll never use anyway. The Rotels are hard to beat! :T

I don't doubt that rotels are great sounding speakers. The only feature I really would like is hdmi switching and for it to be able to process PCM 96/24 audio from BD or HD-DVD.

$2k is a bit much and I've read similar comments from other Club Rotel members as well. I was thinking of looking into the new NAD receivers that support hdmi but I think some of their lowr models only do video switching too.

When a manufacturer says their receivers will only do video hdmi switching does that mean it'll strip out the audio feed? I just don't understand what hdmi video switching means when hdmi is supposed to carry audio and video.

HDMI can carry audio as well, but you don't have to do anything with it. The 1057 will pass the audio signal through the switch as well.

KD, can you please elaborate? I just purchased a 1057 but can seem to be able to get the audio from my PS3 via HDMI.

You won't be able to. The 1057 is switching only. My statement was in reply to whether the audio gets stripped going through the switch or not.

The audio that's on the cable will go through this switch if you wanted your TV to receive the audio signal. You will have to run an optical cable along with the HDMI to get sound out of the 1057.

                      Hello,
Thanks to reading your forum for the past few days, I pulled the trigger and purchased my 1066 yesterday. Whee!

I have a boat-load of questions, but here is my first:

Do you recommend that I use the 1066 for video switching?

                      I have:

                      Hi,

I spent a lot of time listening to NAD and Rotel receivers in the store and decided to go for the cheaper NAD T753.

Unfortunately, I am having a lot of problem with the video switching abilities of the receiver. There is a strong red push (10-15% measured with the Avia...

A customer with a B&K Reference 50 is upgrading to a plasma. He is using the component video switching/upconversion feature in his Ref 50, and was wondering if it's possible to assign the same component input to more than one A/V input.

In this case, he wants to have the option of...

Hi folks, looking to get sky HD very soon and will be using the component outputs from the sky box & the component outputs from dvd player to send to a sanyo z2 projector, so just wanted to know if the video switching within the 1068 is capable of handling a 720p signal from sky HD?

                      Hi everyone,

I've had a 1067 for several months now and finally got around to setting it up to do video switching for 480P input from my dvd player and HD input from my cable hd-dvr box. I connected the component output from those 2 sources to the 1067 and then the component output from...
