Am I right that the 976 will not do any extra processing on Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS audio? I think that is what the manual is telling me. A lot of receivers give you some options to "tweak" the 5.1 sound, but I when I hit the surround mode button on DD or DTS sources, there appears to be no changes. Thanks for any help.

You are correct. The RSP-976 does not have any post processing for Dolby Digital or dts.

I'm sure that's part of it, but I'm sure it had more to do with money. To do all they can for performance at a price point. To add anything else like post processing would add some cost (especially something like THX) and most people just want to turn it on and listen.
