    Pre/Pro Upgrade Advice

Hi everyone, this is my first post on these forums although I am an active member on other AV forums.

I found my way here due to the Rotel Club specialist section which is key to my question today...

I currently have a Yamaha 757SE (£500, $900 ish) receiver driving B&W 600s3 speakers (See my sig. for full details) via an RB-985 Power Amp.

When I first paired the Yamaha up with the B&W's without the RB-985 the sound was well, disappointing! It just had no depth, no guts, no soul if you will, it was hollow and generally unpleasant. So a few days later I had myself a second hand RB-985 and connected it via the Pre-Outs of the Yamaha and WOW the difference was amazing, the sound I knew my speakers were capable of was coming at me with details I had never heard before!

Now i'm thinking (Especially as I just got an Arcam DV79 DVD player that provides wonderful source material) of upgrading the Yamaha to a dedicated Processor.

As I have a Rotel Power Amp I immediately though of the Rotel 1068 and 1098. I have also had a second hand offer on a Rotel 1066.

Which of these combinations would benefit me most? Is my Power Amp ok for them? I know it's no 1075 but funds were a little tight at the time.

    All help greatly appreciated!

With the upcoming updates of the 1068 and 1098, you might be able to get a deal on them in the near future. I don't think you would need to go with the 1098, especially with your current set up, unless you just have the cash to burn.

If you want HDMI and Auto EQ features though, Rotel's current pre/pros don't have that... You might want to hold off till CEDIA (9/14ish) to see what Rotel announces for the future.

I've had a good second hand deal on a 1098 already which is quite tempting.

I definetly couldn't afford one of Rotel's new offerings when they arrive... a bit out of my league!!!

Another idea offered to me is a Harmon Kardon 8500 receiver that apparently was quite a heavyweight in its day... Still quite fancy a 1098/1068 though...

What about the 1066, someone has offered me a second user one of those at a really low price only i'm concerned that it would be a little old.

Does anyone have any good info on the 1066 compared to the 1068 and also (I know it's not exactly the right place for this) the HK8500.

        Cheers
        Dan

I believe the 1066 was sonically inferior to the 1068 according to most users. It also has less features in the software so I would pass on it.

OK thats good to know, I'll be giving that one a miss!

Basically at the moment it's between either adding a Rotel 1098 to my existing RB-985 power amp, or maybe going for the Harman Kardon AVR8500 which gets some great write-ups and in it's day was £1800 (Roughly $3000 - $3200) and is available to me for £535 (Roughly $1000)

The 1098 on offer is in the region of £750 ($1500) does that sound like a good offer or is it a bit much at this stage in its life?

            Thanks
