RSP 1068 problem **Updated w/Small Review**

    Hi Everyone,

I returned from vacation to find my new rsp 1068 had been delivered. So I took a few hours and installed it. It sounds/works great but I cannot get the supplied remote to access the OSD.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to get to the OSD from the front panel? Am I doing something wrong? I've read the manul but if the answer is there I missed it.

FYI I can see the on screen info prompts, just not the setup display.

    Thanks,

    Steve B

      Steve,

I concur with Matt you must press the AUD button on the remote to access the functions.

Congratulations by the way, you are the first I know of to receive the 1068, please keep us posted.

      Enjoy your toy,

      Azeke

        Congratulations on your new gear.

Also I think you can only get OSD on s-video and composite video connections and not components video (or at least it was that way on my RSP-1066). I may be wrong on this though.

By the way, what is your first impression? I am sure there are a lot of guys here dying to know how this pre-pro is.

        Thanks,
        Maziar

You seems to be the first to have gotten the RSP-1068. So maybe you could help us out in an another debate, does it have Dolby Prologic IIx?

You are so lucky....... I would love to get my hands on one, but as usual Europe is a bit behind.

Does it come with the 1050 remote ?

Did you have 1066 before, and how does it compare ?

            Regards Eelco

              Dave,

Based on other forum member reports, it seems that the 1068 had problems with integrating PLIIx in the 1068 (bugs) and therefore Rotel elected not to put it on the initial shipments of the 1068. Rotel is
currently working to eliminate the bugs and should be providing an update in the near future. Maybe Geoff can further elaborate on this matter.

              Regards,

              Azeke

                Hello Again,

Thanks for the input everyone. The remote (rr-1050) was the issue. I did not hit audio first. (wow what a dumb mistake) I guess I am too used to my current remote (Home Theater Master MX700) which is set up to punch through all receiver functions.

On first listen, the system sounds amazing. The center is extremely clear needing less volume to get the same definition I had before with the same speaker set up. (Paradigm)

The unit is too new to really tell you much about the sound but I will be watching a few films today for work so I will be able to post a comparative review to my old processor (Denon AVR 3802).

                It does not have PLIIx.

                Thanks again for the help.

                  Steve,

When you get a chance, can you lookup the firmware version on your RSP-1068 and post it here. If it's like the other recent Rotel processors and receivers you hold down the MUTE key on the remote for about 5 seconds and it will appear on the display.

I am trying to understand what "basically the same" firmware between the RSP-1098 and RSP-1068 means... Clearly there has to be some differences because of the quite different displays between the two etc, but it would be possible to have the one set of firmware recognise and control both.

I will await your review with great interest. I own a 3801, so I am curious how it compares to the 1068.

                      Congrats Steve!

Just so you know, being one of the first people to actually get the 1068, you are about to bombarded with a barrage of questions

Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

                        Hi Again,

Well, I've had a few hours with the RSP-1068 and have been listening to it carefully. I have not had a chance to tweak speaker levels (but I shouldn't be too far off since I had with the old processor).

I have checked it out with the following source material:

                        1) 2 Fast, 2 Furious, Pirates of the Carribbean
                        2) A Dolby SR encoded TV show I mixed this winter (that I've heard at least 100 times in dozens of environments)
                        3) Beatles "Help" DVD
                        4) Bob Marley "Catch a Fire" played as an MP3 (320 kbps Stereo) through a SlimP3 player (analog in)
                        5) Jellyfish "Spilt Milk" CD (digital in)

Here are some of my thoughts:

                        1) The best description for the sound is open and airy. It sounds very live and well defined. I hear a lot of detail but nothing sticks out as harsh or pumped.

                        2) The surround processing sound is excellent. Especially with respect to the center channel. The mix of "Pirates" was amazing. I had just seen it last week with the AVR-3802 so it was the closest to an A/B test I had. Overall I had more clarity in the center and the dialog was easier to hear. I'm sure this was much closer to the mix than the 3802 played.

On the show I mixed, the 1068 sounded as close to the mix studio as I've heard, taking into account my room dynamics. I did have to reduce the HF to a -1 becasue I found some sections a bit bright. BTW reducing the HF did not diminsh the nice "airy" quality of the playback and it sure is nice to be reaching for a HF knob to cut a bit rather than to try to dig out dialog.

                        3) The Beatles DVD was better than it ever sounded before, as was the Jellyfish CD. The 2 channel imaging is beautiful. I highly recommend that DVD if you want to get a sense of what those amazing analog mixes really sound like. It's a bit weird in that the film mix switches to a 2 track music mix whenever a song comes up but it's so worth it for those mixes.

                        4) The MP3's were very smooth sounding. I'm sure I did hear some aliasing in surround modes, but it did not detract from the experience. It was gone once it was put back into 2 channel.

                        5) The setup is very easy (once you figure out how to use the remote)

                        6) I'd like it to have a "dim" button in addition to the mute. That's only a minor niggle though. I think I might try to program a remote macro to turn it down 10 and one to bring it back up 10.

So, I 'd say that I am extremely happy with the sound and the product as a whole. It is a big step up in definition and detail from the Denon (which I also like very much) It costs alot more but in my case it was money well spent. FYI, I bought the RMB-1075 amp along with the RSP-1068.

Here is the rest of the system for reference:

                        Fronts-Paradigm Monitor 7 v.2
                        Center-Paradigm CC370 v.2
                        Surrounds-Paradigm Mini Monitor v.2
                        Sub-Paradigm PW2200 (powered)

BTW the firmware is V 1.1.1-031111

I hope that helps. If anyone has any specific questions I've not covered here feel free to post it here and I'll try to check it out for you.

                        Thanks Again,

                        Steve Borne

I just got my 1068. I’ll set it up tonight. Depending on the timeframes I’ll post a review tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up on the remote issue.

                            SBrocket,

                            Hi!

I got a 1098 a month or so ago, and I just thought I'd write on a couple of points...

I initially found it a tiny bit too bright. I had HF at -1 too. After a couple of weeks, including a 1 week constant on session, I found it smoothed out a tiny bit.

But then the revelation! I had it connected to my 1075 and Arcam P85 amps with $70 (a pair) Van den Hul C5 cables. I borrowd some Merlin Chopin's and Chord Chorus's (www.chord.co.uk) and the difference is just incredible! With the Merlins, the sound was so smooth and detailed and you just wanted to turn it up (HF now at 0). But I felt 2 channel music could be punchier. With the Chord, the 1098 is perfect. So smooth, really punchy, and you just want it louder and louder! Chord Chorus costs about $250 - so I use this for L and R and Merlins for the rest.

                            You might want to investigate!

                            My system:

Arcam DV88+ connected by Chord Prodac
                            1098
                            1075 connected by Merlin Chopin
Arcam P85 connected my Chord Chorus
                            B&W ASW675 sub
                            M&K K-17's and K-4's

                            Andrew

Can you tell us what DAC's are in the 1068?

and are there DAC's for each channel?

FYI, the manual has DPL IIx all through it. So it would seem that the people that expect an upgrade are correct.

Sound great but not dialed in yet, I'll keep you in the loop.

Why isn't the 1068 on their site yet?

And does it have the Bypass feature like the 1098 does? If I remember correctly, the 1066 didnt have this. Thanks! And how much are they!!!??

Congratulation to the lucky forum members that have received their new toys!!! Now a couple of key questions that will determine which pre/pro to buy. Is DPL IIx going to be incorporated in later models of the 1068 or is Rotel for SURE going to provide a software update??? What other features does this new unit have that makes its MSRP more than the 1066??? I am down to the NAD T163 and the Rotel RSP 1068, with the purchase of either one I will be finishing my 7.1 setup and completing my move to separates.

I have a Denon 3801 & 1095 amp. I think the 1068 may sound better than your 3802 because of the 1075 amp. When I got my 1095 there was quite a difference.
Can you use the pre-out's on your 3802 and then compare back to the 1068. That would give you a better A/B comparision of both processors.

                                        LCSeminole,

                                        Re your questions:

                                        Upgrade from Denon 3802

My friend Matt and I both upgraded our Denon 3802's, first with Rotel amps and then with (respectively) the RSP-1066 and RSP-1098. My short answe is "Just do it" both represented just amazing upgrades for the money, especially on music CDs and DVDs.

I have listenned to both systems. The RSP-1098 (which is understood to have the same basic processing engine as the RSP-1068 ) is just amazingly better than the Denon - there is no real comparison at all, more musical, more dynamic, more reall!. The RSP-1066 is no slouch either sounding way better than the Denon 3802 and my friend Matt remains very happy.

                                        Re the NAD

Well you should listen for yourself and decide. I have heard the NAD when I was on my CD player hunt and while it is very good (perhaps comparable to the older RSP-1066 ) - for me I very much like the RSP-1098 (and presumably the RSP-1068 ) sound. At this level - sound is personal. However if you do have the Rotel Amps then I'd suggest you consider the Rotel processors - to keep that "family" sound.

Dolby ProLogic IIx for the RSP-1068

Rotel have updated their web site which have the on-line manuals for the RSP-1068 which are littered with instructions on how to set-up DPL IIx. All that's missing is the software update - which is understood to be weeks away (see the other posts in this forum)

                                        Enjoy

                                        Geoff

And does it have the Bypass feature like the 1098 does? If I remember correctly, the 1066 didnt have this. Thanks! And how much are they!!!??

It was added to their site just a few hours ago. It doesnt have the price, so what are you guys paying for it? And Yes, it has the Bypass feature.

                                            RSP-1068 Owners,

I am updating the RSP-1098 wish list to include the RSP-1068. I have the manual but need to check something that isn't clear.

What is actually displayed on the RSP-1068's front panel when one of the set-up menus is used? IE Do you need to use the TV monitor for all of this?

What is displayed when you use the remote to do things like, change volume, or surround modes using the SUR+ key?

                                            Thanks in advance

Yes, to take advantage of the osd you need a monitor hooked up to it. Press the aud button on the remote, its display will say Rotel, then push the menu button on the remote and follow the the menus on your'e monitor.

I just wanted to share an odd experience I've been having with my trusty old RSP-976 surround sound processor. For quite some time now (well over a year, maybe more) I've been having one helluva time with the remote control. Specifically, the 976 would only respond intermittently to volume up and down...
