    Long Phono Cables Question

I have a question about using long phono cables with my Rotel Rx-1052 receiver. My receiver is on one floor and my turntable and good speakers on another floor. I control via a remote IR Receiver. I have a 50 ft shielded audio cable between the Rx-1052 and turntable.

Besides a possibly lower signal, will the sound from my turntable be affected much by the lenght of the cables? Would using a Rotel Phono Pre-amp (or other) with the 50 ft cables help this?

I seem to detect the music being flatter and not as bright as it was when it was hooked up directly to the receiver.

    Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

The signal loss isn't linear. You loose more off the top than from the mids and lows. Using a phono preamp to boost voltages certainly will help.

      I agree with Jery,

Long RCA line level cables tend to have high capacitances and higher than normal resistance and inductances... The net effect is to roll off / and (sometimes) slightly smear the high frequencies...

A good line level phone pre-amp right next to the turntable would help both boos the line signat from the typical 1 or 2 mV level of the phone cartridge to 1V...

A better quality (especially low capacitance) cable would also help...

Thank you both for your help. I think I'll invest in a pre-amp.

          RX1052 as preamp with RB1080
          by b&w fan
I just bought a RB-1080 power amplifier (not in yet) which I am going to coupled to a RX1052 receiver that will work as preamplifier. I delayed the purchase of a dedicated preamp just to reduce the pressure on my cash flow. My speakers are a pair of B&W 703.

          Do you think that using...

Component video cables into receiver or tv?
          by tboooe
Hi, I was wondering if there is a preferred method of connecting the componet video cables. Should I connect them into the receiver or directly into the TV. Is there any benefit of doing either?

I plan on buying the rsp 1068 soon.

And to verify, using component video...

Halo JC 3 -- a step up from previous phono preamps in my system
          by Burke Strickland
A while back on this forum in a discussion about the Halo JC 1 power amps & JC 2 BP preamp that I am enjoying in my 2 channel music system, Chris D predicted that the next hi-fi component I would buy is the JC 3 phono preamp. At the time I wasn’t sure that was in the cards. I recognized its...

          Phono stage? What's that??
          by nicholtl
Hey all, so I've been doing some research and getting interested in adding a turntable to my system. Lately, I've been looking at the VPI Scout with JMW 9 arm, which is usually sold as a package on several online sites like audioclassics or acousticsounds. Some of you guys might know of it from a...

          Phono ground work around??
          by InTheRed
I'm looking hard at getting a 1068/1075 combo and had a few questions before I take the plunge.

It seems the 1068 (and most of Rotel's centerpieces) does not have a phono input and, more specifically, a phono ground. Unfortunately, the cables from my turntable are hardwired and have a...
