    Destructive RSP 1098

Please be warned, this is long apologies all round!!!!

Having only recently moved to Rotel from Denon. I quickly made a dash back home to set up my newly arrived RSP 1098 with the 1075 power amp. What a combo! However, before this, I updated, well I thought I was updating the new Rotel by using the the updates on their website. However, for some stupid reason, I only updated flash updates 3 and 4 and not 1 and 2. I know, I know, I'm stupid and naive. When it came to updating the system using the MTTY software, there was nothing, then five minutes later, there was around 100 lines of dribble Once that had done, I switched off my Rotel and powered up, but no joy, it would not power up in standby mode. I set the switches back to off and thus enabling power up in standy. I thought nothing of it and proceeded to set up my new gear. Plugging everything where it should go and all excited like a child at Xmas, I turned on the processor and amp and cranked up the volume, but nothing (no, mute was not on lol). Hmmm I thought, so I unplugged all the leads and proceeded to try subwoofer only just in case my power amp was the problem, but again nothing. I can't even get a test tone with the subwoofer, it just goes to test tone and then switches back to the main menu. Grrrrr, I was frustrated, but kept going. Bugger it I thought and put on a movie. The movie worked fine, however there was no sound Even before the movie started there was a constant flashing of DPLII on the screen, around every 3 seconds. To add to my woes, on the TFT screen when the menu is activated, the input of digital and analogue flashes between the two, like it can't make up its mind which one is plugged in. ( I have tried three different digital connections with different leads, and still no joy - I even tried the leads in my old setup just to make sure they were not the culprit). All I can say is HELP!!!! I have tried downloading and resetting everything again, but with no joy and its beginning to frustrate the hell out of me. As when I try to download the flash updates 1 through to 4, it gets to the last bit and turns off the processor regardless of the position of the dip switches. Mind you,I can't power up the processor when they are on. I just ain't got a clue, being new and all to the Rotel scene, so my wife suggested this forum and one is hoping someone out there can help, or lead me in the right direction.

Kindest Regards from a sad and lonely rotel owner

The problem with trying to update something before using it is that you have no idea what you are updating from. Is your 1098 a series 2, 3 ? and I've even heard there may be a series 4 out there. Different software applies(to each series).

OK, first things I see are 'newly arrived' and 'applied the updates'.. Did you power it on and check what version you were at before? There are currently many revision's of firmware for the 1098, 1.x 2.x 3.x and I'm pretty sure 4.x

Going from 1.x to 2.x requires all the EEPROM upgrades.

3.x is for a different TFT screen and has it's own line that can't have 1.x OR 2.x software.

4.x I think is for another TFT screen or possibly digital board. It also can't have 1.x, 2.x, or 3.x software. These units have the latest updates, that's why the 4.x software isn't on the site.

Since you just got it, and if it's new, it probably had 3.x or 4.x software. If it had the 4.x software and you applied anything from the Rotel site, you're probably messed things up pretty bad. If it had 3.x software and you put 2.x on it, you might be able to fix it by applying the 3.x software.

So basically, what software version were you at? If you don't know the answer, there's your problem. You said you only applied rom3 and 4 instead of 1-4. That would lead me to believe you had a really old 1098 as roms 1-3 are only required when going from 1.x to 2.x software. For the latest 2.x and 3.x software, only rom 4 is required. So either you were at 1.x and missed some steps, or you never checked and probably shouldn't have done anything..

Yup Jerry and Kevin are right. You need to know what version of firmware you had to be able to upgrade.Plus if it was a new machine and upgrade to the firmware may not have been needed. If you knew what firmware it came with you could attemp to reload it.Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.I've done upgrades on our store demos where I've missed a step and had to redo the install.Good luck.

          Hi there,

Sorry, the software version was v3 onwards, so I guess I have totally ball's it up ...I have tried doing everything again, but it just won't let me...Yeh, I know I stupid and very naive, but I was so excited it really did not occur to me...I guess that is my own stupid fault, having come from a HT receiver background where everything is already in place for you

Mark sorry to read about your woes.

If you have just got the 1098 and it was bought in by the dealer for you I would guess it had the Ver 4 software.

I have had mine a couple of months now and it has the Ver 4 software.

If the dealer has had it in stock for some time then it maybe Ver 3, probably be best to return to the dealer for repairs.

The Ver you are reading on screen could be the one you installed.

                Thanks Spear,

I only got it Saturday, I reckon it was old stock...I have been banging my head against the wall since then...

The version I read, was the one which I read before I attempted anything...I guess it could be just a product that ain't going to work lol

Mark, I feel very sorry for you. I think I know how excited you were and how frustrated and afraid you must feel now. However, rest assured that your dealer or Rotel service in Australia can fix this problem and that there is no permanent harm done.

Now, as far as the bruises to your ego go, some good may come out of this situation yet. This thread may serve as a lesson for someone in the future; don't fix it if it ain't broke. By sharing on this forum you may have helped someone avoid the same problem in the future.

Isn't it on the V3 units, you should only have done the flash update for version 4 (talking about the EEPROM update)...

                      I know there's version 3.1.5.
