Hey dear members of Rotel club, I just joined the club with the addition of a RMB1075 to my system. I was using the Denon AVR2805 before as my receiver and now using its Preouts and as a Preamp. I've noticed that, I have to turn the volume on the 2805 to around -20 to -10 dB range to get good volumes now, whereas I could stay around -30dB before when I didn't have the 1075 and was satisfied with the output from the speakers. Is this normal? When using the 2805's preouts, does it automatically changes the reference level to a different level?

It is interesting that many amps (like denon) have a volume dial that goes from -70 to +20, but Rotel from 0 to 100. It's the dB scale, and I believe the idea of "Reference volume" actually just means, the preamp is outputting the same voltage as the input (ie. gain = 0).
But the amps are not all equivalently sensitive, ranging from 0-1V to 0-4V or even more. (RMB1075 is 0-1V, RMB1095 is 0-1.5V, RB1090 is 0-1.8V) Rotel does this to help match different amps in a multi-channel setup, even if it is not perfect (hence only the same amps should be used).
In addition, 1V to 1 amp will not have the same output as 1V to another amp, depending on sensitivity and power capability... and 1W to 1 speaker will not sound as loud as 1W to another more efficient speaker...
So, the idea of a reference level is crazy, imho. It may be nice to know that the preamp is outputting the same level as the input (ie. gain=0), and with the Rotel preamp I don't know at which volume setting that is, but it is unnecessary information.

so basically, I'm not hearing something unusual, I just need to recalibrate all the speakers to balance their outputs properly, right? Is it also safe to assume that the Rotel 1075 amp is more powerful than the Denon 2805's amp section and I can turn up the volume to the desired level?- Bottom

Yes, go for it. You'll get 2x as much current to drive the speakers as the resistance falls below nominal for some frequencies, something the Denon cannot do. You should notice the bass is much cleaner, tighter, more controlled.Originally posted by BlazeMasterso basically, I'm not hearing something unusual, I just need to recalibrate all the speakers to balance their outputs properly, right? by caberxxI am new to the Classe world. Six months ago I purchased a pair of CA-M400 amps, the CP700 preamp and the CDP202. I'm very impressed with the sound, but have a quick question. With my previous stereo set up (Arcam), I would never turn the volume past half, otherwise the amps would distort. So essentially,...-

by FJD6523:P This is my first post so thank you for your patience.
I have decided to go forward with adding 5.1 to my main system and have pulled together all my equipment with an idea. I have an uncompromised 2 channel setup and am going to use my Denon 3805 and dvd-2910 taken from the other...-

by boeI have a lot of feaure requirements that to me don't seem unreasonable but might seem demanding to others. I'm having a very difficult time narrowing down a reaonably priced $1000-$2000 preamp. I would really prefer a black front to match all my other components (plus I prefer my HT as black as possible...-
