I don't believe it's possible, you need to have a serial port....

Look online for a USB to serial port adapter... such as this one (one of the first I found on a google search, no preference indicated by me).

Mike do you have a docking station that has a serial port? My laptop doesn't have one either but my docking station does. You definately need a serial port...Ags

There's a variety of USB to serial adapters available. The better ones some with software that allow you to change the com port and baud rates etc. I use one from Keyspan and it works very well though it wasn't as cheap as some of the generic models.

I second Andrew's endorsement of the Keyspan Adapter. I have one and use it with a variety of devices and it has never failed. I did my RSP 1068 last night without a hitch.

i also have a VAIO laptop without a serial jack, and i have a belkin usb to serial adapter. i use it for MX remotes, etc... it is active with software, etc.

it DOESNT work with the 1098. i just tried it and im going to call rotel tomorrow to see what is going on. when i loaded up the program from their website (MTTY), i set all the settings up, and press connect, then turn on the unit, and i just get a single line of crap.

at this point the program seems to lock up. if i disconnect, it gives me an error and the program stops responding. but there is definately communication, because when i turn on the unit, it sends information, i can see it on the lights of the adapter.

has anyone else used the belkin adapter and had success?

You can't do the software updates reliably with an adapter?

Most dealers will help you with this, I thought....

How to upgrade the Rotel 1066
                      by Andrew Pratt
I recently got the Rotel RTC 1066 pre amp and one of its features is that it has upgradeable firmware. You can request the latest firmware by emailing Rotel here or you can download the latest version (currently 1.45) from here The cable you need to update your firmware is available from Rotel and is...

Rotel 1098 HDMI upgrade completed with picture
                      by Azeke
                      Good afternoon everyone,

I had to send my RSP-1098 to Rotel for a recurring LCD display issue. It seems that the relays were upgraded from 2A to 5A as well as some other minor circuit modifications. While it was there I requested a HDMI component upgrade, which they graciously honored,...

                      RSP-1098 Firmware upgrade
                      by Azeke
                      Andrew,

I apologize for putting you on the spot, but is there any word from Rotel on when they will be releasing the Firmware upgrade for the 1098.

It seems that there is a 1.5 beta version based on a previous post.

                      Thanks,

Anyone else notice the sonic improvements, as well as other improvements on the firmware upgrade (v 1.1.6) of the 1098?

                      Just curious,

I've been trying to do a firmware upgrade to my Rotel 1098 for a while and keep running into the same problem; I can't input anything via HyperTerminal. Evertime I'm prompted to input 1, 2 , or 3, I cant type anything.

I'm using a PC running XP, however, I changed the compatability of...
