    Wanting to purchase: RB-1080

Before I start, I'd like to extend thanks to the members on this forum who helped me make this difficult decision.

After lots of research, and finally listening to my mate's 1080, I was convinced it was the way to go - such a strong, energetic sound. So, this afternoon off I went to the local Brisbane Encel dealer to purchase this baby.

    ALAS...... :M

I'm a student = tight budget. Initially it was $1k - but after I heard the amp and heard people here were getting for ~$1100 - $1200AUD mark I've been living on baked beans solid for 3 weeks now.

Walking striaght into the store, cash in hand mind you, I walked up to the counter and asked for one silver 1080. No demos, no questions.... 10 minutes later (as if it is hard to spot a 1080 box they're colossal) the bloke comes back with one and proceeds to ask me for the full retail price of $1599AUD. Hmm I thought.. must just be standard practice to go by full retail. So I re-emphasized the fact that I was paying in cash, and had only used the equivalent time it had taken him to retrieve the box from the warehouse.

5 Mins later, after checking with his manager, the best price he could give me was $1450.

This puzzled me... For one, he had stated earlier that there were some black model 1080's (older revision) selling for $1000AUD, which were, according to him, cost price + %10. This would mean their cost would've been ~$900AUD. So how was it that I was paying $550AUD markup for the 10 mins it took the guy to pull the box from the warehouse.

I used to work as a salesman part-time for a POS retailer (as I'm now a fourth year elec. eng. student), and as such I appreciate the work required by good salesmen in terms of keeping up with product knowledge, keeping track of clients etc. 20% was considered a good margin with 10-15 being more realistic.

However when I'm asked to pay 66% margin on an item when the salesman actually knew less about the item than members on this forum, was absolutely no help to me (was actually pretty rude), and all given I was in the shop WITH CASH, no qstns demos anything... Unbelievable.

I could've been out in 3 mins flat, they could've made a couple of hundred bucks, and I would've been a happy customer. Now though, they've lost the easiest $$$ they would've ever made, and moreover, they've lost my future business - a biggie considering my field of work and first purchase of a solid power amp (which will later need an accompanying surround processor, interconnects, and speakers/sub to match).

So I'm wondering if there are any dealers out here in Australia (preferably Brissy region) who are willing to sell a 1080, and make a very quick and easy sale (any method of payment including direct deposit is fine with me). Even any recommendations as to who I should speak to?? Feel free to PM.

I'm in debt to the people of this forum who's advice and in depth knowledge is better than any in-store help I've had so far. Esp Aussie geoff take a bow! Hopefully I will be able to add my humble 1080 setup to the rotel pics sections soon :T

    Until then...

    Cheers,
    David

          Hey John,

Really appreciate your help with this. It's either I look too much like a student, or the fact there is only one other store in the Brisbane region selling 10 series gear apart from the Encel/Stereo Supplies chain.

          Have PM'ed you.

            Kingo102,

I hope you got your RB-1080. I called my dealer yesterday, and he said that he just sold the last one (maybe you were then one that snagged it :W), and his next shipment is not until January.

Kinda stuffs up my plans of adding a new 1080, or trading the 1095 for 3x1080

But maybe it's a blessing. I might wait for Rotel's digital amps before I commit to buying more analog amps.

Hmm... then you're not going to like me Geoff because that was me who snagged it....

I gave Peter @ stereo supplies on the gold coast a call and mentioned your recommendation. Goes to show the power of Club Rotel! All in all an excellent guy to deal with, and would thoroughly recommend him myself. He was even willing to lend me the only available store unit should there be a lack of stock. You may want to ask him about this??? 3 1080's - i'd either hate to be your neighbour or hope to hell that you had good taste in music!

The ironic element of this whole saga:

When I called Pete yesterday, there was only one (silver fascia) remaining in the country - that being the exact same unit that Encel Macgregor had tried to sell me @ $1450! Talk about justice...

Am eagerly awaiting the maiden voyage, either tomorrow or Monday, as it is being shipped down to the GC from my "beloved", and much geographically closer, Encel store. Kudos to everyone for their help with this, hopefully I can return the favour to future prospective Rotel buyers.

PS. I was initiallly tending towards a ditial amp myself - have some major things going for them. In my limited expereince with purchasing audio gear though, it was/is probably too early for me to consider it. Mainly because it is still evolving technology. IMO analogue amps (correct me if I'm wrong JDH) have pretty much reached for all audible intents their limits in regards to price/performance ratio. I have no doubt that that digital amps are the future of the audio scene, for heaps of reasons - foremost the nature of all recorded audio these days (digital). Requiring less parts (due to increased efficiency and relative immunity to signal degradation), they should also be much cheaper than their analogue counterparts. Being new tech. though they're not and that eats me.

What news have you heard about the Rotel class d's? I do actually own a D sub amp, and it is fantastic - runs very cool and ~75% efficient full-load as tested in the labs at uni. Is used in the car so is very helpful when the car computer/speakers/lights are on when car is off.

EDIT: Just found the thread on this topic

                1 x RMB-1095 vs 3 x RB-1080?
                by hired goon
                G'day,

I've currently got an RMB-1095 5x200w amp, about 2 weeks old. For a few hundred dollars, I can trade this in to get 3 x RB-1080 2x200w amps.

I'm wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of such a move.

This is what I've come up with:

RT-1080 tuner - display is too dim
                by kneptune
I just traded in an early version of the current RT-1080 tuner (was black version) for a newer silver version of the 1080 tuner (had to make it match the silver RSP-1098 - for the all important WAF).

As per the RT-1080 owner's manual addendum, the newer 1080's display now functions slightly...

What's better to push the mains, RMB-1095 or RB-1080?
                by PewterTA
Okay, I'm looking for a little bit of help here...

I have both the 1095 and 1080 and am trying to figure out which one I want to push my mains (B&W DM604 S3s). Right now I have the RMB-1095 since I haven't gotten my 1080 back off my friend (he's using it for right now until his amp...
