I'm just curious if anyone is using a JC-1 perchannel in thier system? I know its expensive but someone must have a setup like that. Does anyone use any kind of mono amp per channel? How much more incredible is it than a multi channel amp? Thanks J.H.

Heh... Personally I think the JC1s pale in comparison to the MG 20.1s. The big Maggies actually do deserve a lot of respect :W
Cashwise, it's worth mentioning that Magnepan has an incredibly tight pricing (=NO discount!) and strict dealer policy, so a pair of 20.1s turns out to cost about the same as 6 JC1 monoblocks (ok, I did get my JC1s before the price went up).

I too admit that Peter's JC1 setup is admirable and impressive but he won't earn any respect from me until he get's a pair of 800D's to drive with them. :lol:Originally posted by nicholtlYou're an easy man to earn respect from, then. All you need are some amps or a fat wad o' cash.

Hey, man, you're messin' with me in a goood way! :T I used to have a GREAT pair of boxed speakers (the 300 liter [80 gallon] Technics SB-M1) for almost 20 years, so I sure can appreciate that big boxed speakers can sound sweet too...And, there's nothing wrong with the sound of B&W's, it's just different! :BOriginally posted by RebelManJust messing with you Peter, really you have awesome system

Hehe! Honestly, the only things that are ridiculous are my electricity bill and the heat the JC1s generate. Not fun in summer time. In winter time it's not that bad. The media room was 68 degrees the other day. I switched on the amps and within a few hours I had 80 degrees. Nice and cozy! Heats up the room better than the AC can do! :B (However, considering that the AC can chill this rig in the summer time is pretty amazing - but it actually works! I guess the AC people here in the South only pay attention to cooling... It's almost embarrassing that the JC1s can heat the room better than the AC heating...Originally posted by J.H.Hey thats just a sweet setup. I am impressed. It must soun ridiculous! J.H.
ops: )
Anyway, one of these days I'm going to install the amps into Middle Atlantic racks recessed in the left hand wall and arrange for air circulation that moves the air from another (big) living space into, and through, the racks and then out the door. That should finally take care of the heat issues for good

How can you compare the price point? These were made in the late 80's. I like them as much as the MBL 101e towers I see at The Show every year. Look at their price point compared to yours. Can you compare yours to the MBL's? They are $45K for a pair. I'm sure I would like yours just as much even though they are half the price. No need to get defensive, all I'm saying is I love Ribbon Speakers. You have an incredible system that I'm sure you are proud of.

You must have misunderstood my first statement to get so defensive. I was not saying that the Carvers were a different level than yours. I was saying that Ribbon speakers are a whole different level over the traditional transducer type speakers that most of us common folks have to own. If I had the $ to own them, I would have ribbons with out a question. I hope this clears up what I was getting at.Parasound Halo C2

Like I said, I don't know them, and of course I assumed that you were talking about a contemporary speaker, especially since planar speaker technology has evolved quite a bit during the years.Originally posted by slayerHow can you compare the price point? These were made in the late 80's.
You're of course right. Considering the age difference the price point is moot.
Speaking about great speakers of the 80's I just have to mention the wonderful Techics SB-M1 one more time. I used these speakers for almost 20 years before finally upgrading to Maggies. This old Technics 1982 design sounds almost as good as the MG 20.1s and beats the smaller MG 3.6s by leaps and bounds...

Never had a chance to hear to hear those. I just got my taste of Exotic speakers about 5 years ago when I started going to CES every year. We go to Alexis Park for THE SHOW where you get to hear demo's of most of the crazy hi-end speakers and electronics. Have you seen or had a chance to hear the MBL 101's? They are works of art. They image the same, flawless, no matter where you stand, crazy. I've never had a chance to see your speakers though. I never see them at CES. I'm sure they are there but it's hard to see everyone. I'll make it a point to look for them this year.
Do you run any subs in the room? I didn't notice any.

Fine, how about the CAT MBX 1044's. They run $200K to $250K a pair depending on the finish. Made here in Sacramento California. They weigh 1300lbs each and use 3in. thick avonite enclosures. They are usually powered by 3 Monaco amps per speaker.
Would your speakers even be worth talking about compared to these?
Yes, a great speaker is a great speaker no matter what the cost. That is what I was saying in my first post. The Carver speakers made a couple decades ago are still an incredible speaker. Even compared to speakers made today. Yours will still be great 20 years from now. If they still work that is. The Cats costing what they do does not mean they are better, it just means the cost more. So that could be the case with the MBL's as well. Sometimes a lesser priced product is actually the better one.
All I was trying to say to you was that I love ribbon speakers. I mentioned the Carvers due to a friend of mine has a pair. If he had mags, I would have mentioned those. Good luck with the system.Parasound Halo C2

No harm Peter, just got off on the wrong foot. Problem for me is by the time I'm ready for a new upgrade, my last upgrade is already obsolete!!!!! Yes, but it didn't really feel that way. I guess that's because the JC-1s can be had at a more-than-reasonable price, and on top of that, you can buy them one at a time or a pair at a time as your burget allows. I said in an earlier post, that you can (or at least you could before the price went up) get 6 JC-1s for the price of one pair of the flagship Maggies. Yeah, the Maggies sure were a big one-time chunk out of the bank, and they cannot be bought pair-by-pair like the JC-1s can be bought...Originally posted by slayerI'm sure all those JC-1's had to have been a big chunk out of the bank.

I put in three 20A circuits. That's more than enough. The big problem is the HEAT that they generate. I will need to build them into the wall and get a dedicated AC system that blows the hot air out of the room... (I've written more about this in another thread)Originally posted by slayerWhat did you have to do to the electrical in that room?

FYI, if you're looking for ridiculously expensive speakers, there is one word that immediately comes to mind: ACAPELLAOriginally posted by NAVDo you have the link so I can see what is it that make the speakers cost more than a house?
Unreal!!!
For instance a pair of the Acapella Sphaeron Excalibur sells for US $325,000.00 / pair and weighs in at close to 1400 lbs/speaker!
And this is NOT their top of the line model. I vaguely recall that the top of the line model (Sphäron) costs around a million US $... THAT is unreal :B
These speakers are intended for your HOME. The manufacturer recommends a minimum of a 40 m^2 (square meter) room for the Excalibur and 50 m^2. for the Sphäron. (This translates to 430 and 540 sqft respectively).
FWIW, here's the link to Acapella's website

NAV, they are for home use. They too have a million dollar speaker model. If you are ever in Vegas, go to Creative Home Theater. There are several Cat engeneered theater rooms to listen to. The Grand is the big dog with the speakers I had mentioned above. The room has 21 subwoofers in it. The best bass I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. A solid 4 hours of listening to the system at silly levels and I left with 0% ear fatigue. CAT builds the crossovers for each speaker on-site to correct for room problems. It really does make a huge difference. I've installed one of their systems in the 70K range and it was incredible. Go to www.calaudiotech.com to see some of the CAT stuff. Their site does not show all that much. They custom build most of their speakers. If you look at the first pic they show on the left of the two towers with the 12" sub on top and bottom, those are them. The million dollar pair they now have is similar but uses an 18" sub on top and a 22" on the bottom. No pics that I know of but they are on display somewhere right now so I'm sure the pics are out there.
Go to www.creativehometheater.com for a 360 degree look at the rooms. The intro to this site is cool so turn on your sound. Click on systems and look at The Grand to see THE ROOM. Very cool place to visit if you are into theaters.Parasound Halo C2

Yes, I agree that the Acapellas are ugly. Scary? No. The MBL-101 is scary. Look at the cross-shaped thing on the top. What could that mean? That cage looks like it could be supercharged with lethal voltage... It looks like a fly zapper that was made to zap something bigger... That's scary! :BOriginally posted by J.H.Am I the only one who thinks these speakers are scary looking? They look like something in a demented fun house. Each one to his/her own. Personally I prefer the monolith look of the Maggies. I guess some people would classify that as totally boring, but I prefer my speakers to have a clean/sterile look
