First impressions on my new C2!

Well I have been waiting to pull the plug on a new processor for over a year now. I have been running 4 Parasound amps for almost a year. Denon 5900 DVD. Paradigm 7.1 Studio Reference speakers and sub.

I received my C2 Tuesday. Last night was the first time to listen to it and put it through some paces. I replaced a Lexicon Mc-1. I also replaced all of the speaker wires and interconnects. I will not discuss this here because of forum rules.

As regards to the sonic qualities of this processor it seems to smash the older Lexicon. Compared to the MC-1 it has a more defined sound stage, wider sound stage, tighter bass and mid's and mellow highs that are not fatiguing. I popped in Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on SACD and sent it through 5.1 bypass from my Denon 5900. This is the best my system has ever sounded on music. I might actually start listening to music again!

As far as movies, sonically the changes are not as noticeable. Of course there are some but not as drastic as the music changes. The front three speakers seem to be a "wall" of sound instead of 3 separate speakers. Separation is still there, but the sound stage is again larger and more complete. The dialogue on the C2 seems to be clearer than the Lex. I found myself turning the volume up during quiet scenes and down during louder scenes on the lexicon. I watched the carrier launch and missile chase from Behind Enemy Lines and again the separation and sound field was very encompassing.

The downside, I find that setup, unless you have a laptop, is pretty much a PITA! I have a projection system and only have a DVI cable running to the projector. Thus I had to run a temp RCA while I was trying to do setup. It would be nice to have DVI/HDMI on this unit.

The auto calibration was very easy, took longer than I thought, but sound levels were dead on and speaker distances seemed perfect.

So far I am very pleased with the purchase. Can't wait to run it through some other paces tonight.

Congrats, maybe Chris will bestow the ubiquitous dancing banana upon this thread to properly christen your new purchase.

Do you have a sub connected? You should notice better (cleaner) bass out of the LEF compared to your old Lex. To me the clean output from the LEF was jaw dropping, and I agree with the statement about the more homogonous sound, almost if as there was more music, so to speak.

Terrific review, phannson. I too discovered how much better music sounded once my C2 came into my system. Granted, I didn't have anything NEAR an MC-1 to begin with - it was a Pioneer Elite 45TX receiver.

Nevertheless, all your descriptions are right on the money. And it's very true what you said about movies as well. Because you have sound coming at you from all 5 (or 7) speakers, not to mention the fact that movie soundtracks are heavily processed, it's not exactly the best source material to audition your new components on.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and we look forward to hearing more as you continue breaking in your new baby!

(and yes, Chris' congratulatory banana is sure to come...) :T

I will say that music soundtracks do sound better. The sound effects to me didn't really change that much.

I am glad to see that the other forum members agreed with my short review, some times you "hear" a bigger difference than there really is.
