i just noticed the hifi eshop after doing a little research on google. i was moving forward with an order and was going to send around 7000 eur to the bank account earlier mentioned. my order consisted into a B&W 800D pair (almost 7000 eur including shipping !!!)

there is nothing else to say!

please enjoy our full conversation below:

You will order the product and you will receive the payment and shipping instructions automatically by email, just register to our website.

We also offer a 30 Days Return Policy based on the EU regulations for online commerce in which you can test the products and return them in case you're not satisfied with their condition, performance or quality. Full refund will be issued in 7 days after the request is submitted.

Did any of you contact the bank? I would think they would be interested to know that their bank is being used for criminal activities.

                          Can confirm HiFi-eShop.com story

Thanks to all of you! I found ARC preamps online at HiFi-eShop.com incredibly cheap. The email conversation was neary word by word identical to the one in this forum (obviously copy&paste). The payment instructions, account nr and address were the same either. Lucky enough, I googled before sending the money...
Instead of paying I asked for some pictures showing the serial numbers of the preamps, to confirm their age. Instead of the pictures I got a rude answer that it is not their task to serve me, but to tell me how their processes run.
I stopped communication. Next day I got an email that I should pay, or I
could pick up the preamps at an address in Hungary (not the one from the
payment instructions), close to the Romanian border....
I guess I will not travel their with a lot of cash in my pocket...
As someone already said: It was too good to be true...

In a word, "Bank wire transfer" typically means scams. Craigslist is full of them. Read the craigslist "Avoid fraud and scams" section and they are pretty clear about these things and how they are done by scammers.

Sorry you got burned dude !!

never ever!! do a wire transfer of money. That in itself is a red flag.See it quite often on Craig's list and occasionally one scammer slips in on Audiogon.com

Sorry you got ripped off, but you have to know you screwed up. Paypal is there for a reason as well as e-bay and audiogon rules.Once you break them ,you are on your own. That being said, may they rot in hell for taking advantage of you!

B&W's as far as I know are not sold online. If you want said speakers , go to a local dealer. You also get to see them in person , listen to see if they are truly for you.

It's a win win situation. Yeah you might pay more their then one of these internet deals one my find but you will get a brand new pair full factory warranty and support from said local dealer. All B&W dealers I have ever felt with are full of knowledge and enjoy helping you way after the sale.

He's not saying he won't buy from a dealer. Its just that his dealers wants 3 times the money for the same product and service. If the product is the same, the service is the same, then I too would look at cost. In this case the difference seems to be substantial. For the difference you could probably fly to Hong Kong, buy the speakers, and ship them home and still save.

If you know someone abroad that you truly trust, then you could ask them to do it for you, saving you the trip.

I personally hate this price differating strategies that the big companies do sometimes. Why does an ipad cost more in europe than in the us? Its shipped from china anyway. Equally, games on steam costs more in europe than in the us. They aren't even shipped at all. Its all a hoax.

B&W should be able to sell their speakers at aproximately the same prices, minus cost to the seller and transport. And shipping fees are at an all time low at the moment.

well how much is it going to cost him now that he's out all that money?

I f you cannot get a good deal then go somewhere else but know where you are going. I f you cannot afford what you want then look for them used or demos or maybe just realize these speakers are not for you. B&W will not sell online just like many other high end companies but as more stores close that may change to be able to reach out to customers who have no local dealer.

No, thats called inflation. The difference in price even on electronic products is called Price discrimination, and they can do that because they think we are suckers. (we are).

i have a simple rule. for anything that costs over 1000 USD, i but from a local dealer. why? having owned many expensive hifi products, warranty is a must. warranty is usually offered by the local distributor who will not honor warranty and service imports or will charge a lot for it. if i can't afford to buy from the local dealer, then i must accept that i can't afford that item. for big, heavy and expensive and high maintenance items shipping them around for warranty etc is just not worth the hassle for me.

another reason is i do sell stuff after a good few years of usage, and i found that items where i am the original owner and they are locally sourced, usually command a much higher 2nd hand value--something that is not readily apparent during purchase...

I know a lot of people buy both 2nd hand and internationally so there is a huge market (and scammers as well to prey on them) but i am not one of them. as a positive side effect of this, i have developed very good relationships with many local dealers who give me fantastic deals. i actually have dealers who sell me at a price that is 15-20 percent lower than what he writes on the receipt so that when i sell 2nd hand down the line others don't find out that he gives me such a good price. he also gives me fist dibs on latest gear, and crazy discounts the moment new models are announced (and he is allowed to further discount old models) as well as offer home demos.

my point is once you factor in the relationship benefits over a number of years with your local dealer, a deal that may save 20-30% upfront may not be that great after all.

however, if the local dealer is not that great and is charging 3X the usual US/UK list price, then you may be forced to import.

Nothing beats good relationship with the dealer.

Here is how my scam meter works for ebay auction:

                                                                  1) is it priced too good to be true and is the auction duration short? if yes, then it is a scam probably using a hacked account.

                                                                  2) if price is within range i.e. not more than 30% away from market, and the duration is atleast 5 days then i look at the feedback. is the feedback good and relevant? if the selling is selling hifi goods atleast periodically then its a good sign. if all the transactions are private or transactions where the seller is a buyer then i stay away.

                                                                  3) if ratings are good and seem legit then i look at the auction desciption. if it looks geniune i.e. the pics are not from the web (a simple good search will do) and it looks like a normal auction not one listed using some cookie cutter lister then i may consider bidding. again only for smaller ticket item not anything above usd 1000.

                                                                  4) if its still smells a bit i would usually also ask some annoying question that a normal seller would not agree to as scammer are easy to agree to unreasonable terms...

                                                                  5) ofcourse paypal is the only way i'll pay...
