    805D on a Bookshelf

While I see most saying they run or will run their 8o5D (or S) on stands, how do they work on an actual bookshelf? What are the drawbacks? Does anyone here run 805's on a bookshelf?

The 805D has very good bass performance for a smaller speaker. Unfortunately, any time you place a speaker with good bass next to a boundary (wall, floor, shelf), you run the risk of ending up with too much bass and a muddy / boomy sound. Though, you can adress a good deal of this excessive bass caused by "boundary rienforcement" with EQ, like Audyssey (Denon), MCACC (Pioneer), and YPAO (Yamaha). If you don't plan to use a prepro / preamp that has EQ, I would not recommend bookshelf placement, and even with EQ, the sound will not compare to having the speakers on proper stands away from the walls.

will kill the sound stage depth as well, plus with all the issues of reflections from surfaces in lose proximity as a result of location close to walls.

bass boost dues to boundary effects as mentioned by tim can be improved on some way by xing them off to a sub.

but in my opinion one of the worst things you can do is put a bookshelf speaker on a bookshelf ! they should be called standmount speakers instead !

In my 2.1 system I have to use my bookshelves for the 805s to sit in, I have no other choice...I do run another set of them on stands in my dining room next door, so I have been able to compare the differences pretty easily.

Since I use the REL 305 for bass the 805s don't get the boominess they normally would. Also the sound stage is not as deep, though not dramatically different.

So ideally of course I would love to get rid of the bookshelves, but I don't want to be single...so they are staying...

            Boundary Effects

Boundary effects, also known as boundary interference effects, refer to the interactions between sound waves emitted by a loudspeaker and the boundaries (surfaces) of the listening environment or loudspeaker enclosure. These boundaries can include walls, floors, ceilings, nearby objects, and the loudspeaker's own enclosure. Boundary effects are important considerations in loudspeaker design because they significantly impact the loudspeaker's radiation pattern, frequency...

I've been meaning to get this started for a while, but so busy with a variety of topics and projects that I just never get to it by the time the end of the day rolls around!

Well, all I'm going to do is post a few images as teasers for thought right now, with some brief comments, with the...

Any 'buzz' about the new 805D
            by Java
Hi everyone. I've heard that this speaker might be released towards the end of summer '07. Also that the original intent was to have a larger cabinet than the 805S but that idea may have been shelved. I believe the 805D might be seen at CES and was wondering if it is going to be a replica of the 805S...

            805D's and sub
            by ariarec
I am setting up a mix studio and want to use (2) 805D's with the best sub for full range mixing. I was thinking of JL- What do you guys think would be the best way to go? What do you recommend for bass management with the sub? Is it better to get 1 great sub or 2 lesser subs?

Bass reflex bass bin, advice wanted re acoustic lining
            by dstmbgh
I have a pair of original NHT Superzeros and I'm building a single bass bin to accompany them for a more full range music only setup. I say bass bin and not subwoofer because the Superzeros have little to no real bass (see http://www.stereophile.com/content/n...r-measurements), so the bass bin will...
