Which rear speakers for 803s and htm3? 805s or 705?

Help! Do the rear speakers really matter that much? Is this the place to economize? Will I hear the difference? What did you do?
    Thanks for your help.

    CJM,

Matching the rear speakers is important for movies and really important for good 5.1 Music.

I have the 803s as well, and went with 804s for the rears (yeah I know it is a bit extreme but I am single and can have huge rear speakers if I want to). ;-)

But for most people, I would advise going with the 805s instead of the 705s. The 705s have a strong mid-range sound, and it will stand out quite noticibley (sore thumbish) from the 803s & HTM3. With the 805s, you will notice a difference from the 803s/HTM3, but it will still sound similar.

    Regards,
    Darrell

P.S. I did demo both the 705s and 805s (2 weeks each at home) as rears...

      CJM,

I don't know very much about B&W speakers, but I would probably stay within the same series. Make sense?

      Peace and blessings,

I have the 805S and the HTM4S and decided to go with the DM600 S3 for surrounds! While at first I saw them as a temporary solution, I am now seriously considering keeping them! I never listen to 5.1 music, but for movies I think they sound just fine!

Like everything in this hobby it comes down to budget, listening habits, how pedantic you happen to be and the quality of the rest of your system. My focus is two channel, although I wanted decent sound on movies also - multi channel music is occasional.

I already had a pair of 705 & a HTM7 so 705 went to the rear, 804s at front. No complaints at all, in fact it was a big step up from my previous setup. Obviously identical speakers all around is ideal for surround content but 705 at the rear is not a big compromise - you can then spend the dollars on better cables or components which could well make more difference, or just save it for a rainy day.

Follow Dccombs path and home demo each if you can afford either. Otherwise be happy that 705 for movies is almost as good - after all the 805 is not a good match for the 803 anyway - different midrange and its a two way - only match is the tweeter and in a surround mix I don't think it is that big a deal.

If you are a real movie head buy 5 805s or 4 805s and a HTM4, plus a decent sub.

I would put the 805s for rear speakers, but if you want to match also FST timbre, I would go with 804s or even 803 for the rear, then you will have the same matching sound for HT and Multichannel music like DVD-A and SACD etc... And with the full effect of the floorstanders with there woofer for bass ,which the 805s would lack too!!
              Cheers!!

                  Yamaha RX-V2600 running 803s/805s/htm3s?
                  by nick.h
So can the jap yamaha 2600 run the 803s/805s? How much power is enough.

Surely 100watts and higher would be fine for any speaker.

Upgrade from CDM9nt to 805S as rear surround speakers?
                  by kurtholz
                  Hey all

OK, here is one i keep getting mixed opinions on,

i am using my old CDM9nt's as rear surrounds, 803N for fronts,

would changing to 805s as rear be an upgrade ?

now, you think upgraditis is cured, but there is always something else....

                  Amplification for B&W 804S, HTM3
                  by lawoftrust
                  Dear all,

I consider adding a HTM3 and 805S to my current 804S. Usually I am a Naim addicted but I will not buy an AV2, NAP 175 Amplification (at least not now) but I considered Rotel for the time being appropriate. Would an Rotel RSX 1057 be acceptable for the time being. My main interest...

In October 2007 I asked the question on this forum: "Is an 803/4/5 setup too large for my room?" To briefly recap, I was initially considering the 700 series, but was then trying to determine whether the 800 series would work for me given my slightly narrow room (12ft / 3.7m) and my wishes...
