Subwoofer advice needed...

I am looking at buying a sub to compliment my DM602 S3s and LCR60 this Christmas. I have a budget of about $700. The obvious choice would be the ASW 650, but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any other alternatives.

If you're willing to spring for just a bit more than $700, check the Sunfire Junior. Surprisingly capable and very small. I run the Sunfire True Sub EQ (11 inch cube) and it integrates magnificently.

I have always "see" the Sunfire subwoofer with interest. I think they are
not so expensive as if velodyne sub (dd10 in Europe/Switzerland=chf. 4300
=$ 3400 ca. - ?? % from dealer)

I'm not sure how much the Sunfire would cost in Europe but I'm sure it is available there and it most certainly would be less expensive than Velodyne. And to be perfectly honest, I actually prefer Sunfire over Velodyne for my taste. I know that sound strange but I've owned both and the sunfire just works better for my taste.

I have 603s3's as my mains w/rotel rsx1056.I'm using a martin logan grotto which in my opinion is great for music as well as ht.It's a little more than your budget price but it's well worth it.It's just a suggestion but if you can audition one you may be impressed.My .02

I am in the same boat as you are... I am considering the ASW675 and the ASW650.
I am trying to work out a deal where my B&W dealer will let me bring one home and test it out to see which would work. However, at present he does not have an ASW675 in stock (the 675 is considerably more expensive than the 650 but spec-wise it sure can go LOW and it is a very "green" unit using a mere 75W when powered up)

dhof01: it will be 80% HT, 10% music. The room is quite large as the way our house is laid out, the living room, dining room and kitche are all as one.

With that much HT emphasis and a large room, check on Hsu and SVS products- plenty of boom for the buck.

Hi there, I have the same speakers as you, 2 pairs of 602s3. I´ve had the asw300, asw 650 and now ended up with a ASW750! WoooooooW Buying the 750 was the best thing I could have done, and I´m sure many of you agree! I want a bass that really tight that could tune in with my speakers! I turned down the bass on front and back to -2, and the sub does the rest. The sub is so tight that the bassline and bass drum sounds like the 602s have grown in size and power!

If you have the cash, you can´t go wrong, and as I said, some people might think that the 602 are a joke, and you have to have the 700 series before you can talk about good sound! I think the 602´s are the best budget speaker on the market! And buying an asw750 is the best sub you can buy in the b&w range for the 602 with out going over the top, like asw825 or 855! ASW750 draws the line!

TEST IT and hear for yourself! :T

yeah, I know that it does cost a bit! But if listen to the asw750 and listen or feel the difference between the ASW650 and the asw750! You might find it worth saving or worth talking to your bank like I did! IT was worth it!

I also think that there are better choices for HT than the 675, especially if it's in a large room. It also sounds like the 675 may be pushing your budget, which is why internet companies like Hsu, SVS and Outlaw may be a good option. The problem, of course, is that you can't listen to them until you buy them, and I generally consider SVS to be some of the most aestheticly unattractive subs on the market. If you're looking at the lower-end 600 subs, and I would also compare them to the Definitive Technoligies Supercube I or II (II may be more in your price range), which aren't as punchy (which is great for music, but not so much for HT), and can go real low. Not a fan of the Sunfire series, but they also generally get good reviews, and again may be better suited for HT. Or, you can always check out audiogon or ebay if you want to step up but save some $ on a used product (there's an ASW CDM, virtually identical to the 750, on ebay right now).

Either way, the best advice I can give you is to go out and listen for yourself. Good luck...

Thanks again for all the advice. The thing is that I've never had a sub so even a lowly sub would probably sound amazing to me as I have nothing to compare it to.

Now that you have mentioned 80% HT and 20% Music, and 10% commission, I guess since you forgot about it!! ( Just Joking), Then I would advice the ASW 650 as you said and in your budget, but if you had it the other way around ,or let us say 50% HT and 50% Music, I would have insisted that you splurge a little more for the ASW 750 and That is my opinion only!! ASW 750 is smoother and warmer so it is good for Music and perfect for HT too, while the ASW 650 harsher sounding, but is perfect for HT!!

Well, there was a rather big box under the Christmas tree. Upon further inspection, it was a B&W AWS650!!! I ran out, bought myself an 6-meter Audioquest Sub-1 cable and hooked it all up.

First was Master & Commander. Not bad, quite impressed. Swapped DVDs and put in 5th Element. WOW! I think my neighbors officially must hate me now. I followed the simple instructions in the B&W instruction manual and took their initial setup advice. The sub was turned up maybe 25% of the way and the sound was phenomenal.

I only had an hour or so to play with it so it's not nearly setup the way I want it to. Currently, it's in a corner about 10 inches away from the wall on each side with the actual speaker facing the couch where the viewer sits.

Any further advice that will help me get the most out of this wonderful piece of machinery?

I ran a topic a couple of weeks ago about dedicated sub woofer interconnects, in your last reply you noted you also received from Santa a dedicated cable. Did you or could you swap cables on the sub to see if there is a difference. I am still curious if there is a difference between a dedicated sub interconnect and a regular line level interconnect. I run a ASW 600 and if I could do it again I would also move farther up the line, to the 675 or if money was good into the 700 series. You do not realize the effect bass (subwoofers) have on both music and HT when it is done right and especially wrong.

I haven't swapped cables, just did some research about a good cable I could get locally and the Audioquest Sub-1 seemed like a really good one. At this point, I'm concerned about the actual placement of the sub and if I'm pointing it at the wrong direction, have it too close to the wall, etc.
