Rotel or no Rotel + BW that is the question!

    Hey!

I was thinking of purchasing new speakers soon, but here's a dilema
I have gotten myself a RSX-1056 in February and went through soo much trouble that I am starting to gove up on Rotel, even though I LOVED the sound. What happened was ever sisnce I got the Receiver it kept on giving me these clicks and pops every time i would change "Cinema EQ". So I brought it back to the dealer and they sent it to the repair shop. Gotten it back a month after. Same problem. I started getting frustrated becasue I cant even enjoy it to the full potential. Next brought it back again they sent it to Boston. finally Rotel apparently changed the DSP board and upgraded the firmware. Two month after i got it back. Same problems clicks and pops on Cinema EQ and now olso at the volumes of 59 - 61 i get pops through my speakers when i change the volume in increments of 3. Phew....

    Problem was never solved.

My dealer is telling me that he will try to change it to 1057.

Anyways i am starting to give up on Rotel I was thinking of purchasing 1098 with an amo + B&W 703s. Originally and now I am having second thoughts about Rotel!

Should I save up and get better speakers ie entry level B&W 800s?
    1. What Processor would you suggest? I love the look of rotel though. But I really want it to work flawlessly.
    2. What amp?
I would like to have a 5.1 system.
Listening Ratio 70% Music 30 Movies.

I want to take my time save up and invest into something that would last me a long time. I am really picky about sound quality.

Is it worth to go with Rotel? or Should i consider Classe, Arcam? I heard that there are problems with Anthem D2. Krell is too expensive for me

Thank you for your kind advice!!!

you have alot of questions and at this time i would consider start saving and do alot more research(listening) rather than jumping at something. i think currently you are disappointed with your rotel experience and would be unhappy with any rotel product. classe is nice but so are many others and i would be deciding on your speaker selection prior to changing out power units or you will be getting into a vicious circle. yes 800 entry would be better than 700 series. however if you get a chance 705s w/ asw750 makes for an interesting listening experience. save,listen,save,listen,save...and volume for rotel is normal setting.

Thanks for the advice, I did have a chance to listen to 705s with the matching sub. I found them a little bit harsh in highs.

BTW It is not that i am disappointed with Rotel, dont get me wrong i love the sound, it is the quality control that really worries me.

Thanks a lot for your kind advice.

Beware of fixes! If you bought a new component and its not up to spec a week after you bought it have the dealer replace the component with a new do not be satisfied for repairs. Of course if you have had the component for over a mth thats another story. Anyway if you are not satisfied, and the problem is major, keep harping on the dealer for a new component. The remote on my 1068 arrived DOA. I took it to the dealer and got a new one on the spot.

My dealer is trying to get a new 1057 instead. Should i stay with Rotel, or try to uprgade to another brand later on. I am planning on getting B&Ws later on.

If Krell is too expensive then Classe will be to. That is the kind of jump you need tomake from Rotel if you are not happy with the QC. You may just have a 'lemon' - it happens at times.

Do you think i just got that lucky?
Did any of you have similar prblems with clicks and pops with EQ and volume?

Would it be worth upgrading to another company or 1098 is enough?

              Thanks!

While many have experienced good things with Rotel + B&W, that shouldn't remove other solutions from your radar.

A couple of interest, especially if you're looking at receivers, would be Outlaw, Arcam, or Anthem...

While the B&W/Rotel relationship is well known, you may find that another line works better for you, with a similar, possibly better sound.

Does anybody have a list of companies, from high end to lower end.

                  Ex.
                  1. Krell
                  2. Classe
                  3. Anthem
                  4. Arcam..
                  5. Rotel

                  etc....

If possible regarding their pre/pros ?
I would be llokin into something similar to 1098.

                  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Most AV enthusiast place the 1098 as the ultimate pre/pro. I was loath to spend that kind of money on one so I went with a 1068. Aside from the advantage of the LCD, the 1068 is essentially the 1098 sonic equal, better yet its only $1600. Most of the 1098 video capabilities are now present in the 1068 (circuitwise) they identicaly adept at audio. As with all chip components the prices diminish exponentially in a few years that has been to the 1068's advantage. Thus If buying Rotel The 1098 is still the top dog, most, of all when it comes to control convinience, but as to performance the 1068 for slightly more than 1/2 the price is almost if not its equal. My guess a new higher performing 1098 might not be too far away in the horizon.

Although you can use any amp you want, keeping the amp and preamp the same brand ensures a nice sensitivity and control match.

Hmm... Definitely not the ultimate pre/pro. I had the 1068 (the 1068's sonic equal in your words) for two months and dumped it on audiogon. Rotel is great for 700 series B&W and below. 800 series speakers are way too revealing for any of the Rotel electronics to shine.

With all do respect, it sounds like you are an ad campaign for their products. In a previous post you talked about the 1095 being a wold class amp...... These posts are a huge stretch. I had the 1095 as well.... and it was a great powerhouse for its price. But it is definitely mid-fi.

I am currently running a couple rotel pieces and they do their job. My two 1077 d-class amps power my in ceilings and wm6 outdoor speakers and sound better than any whole-house system I have ever heard. But, in two-channel the difference between Rotel and Classe is clear.
Like I have always said, I am no audiophile and the difference is clear

If you want a slight jump up in sonics, but not necessarily in price/cost, I'd look at Arcam. For more, you are looking at Krell/Classe/Mac price range IMHO which you have indicated is too expensive for you.

There were widespread problems with the RSX 1056 popping, humming, crackling, and erratic switching. Your dealer should know this and replace your unit promptly. I bought the 1056 in April and found out about the problems that week from this forum. Thanks all! So I talked to my dealer and he replaced it with the new RSX 1057 for the clearance price of the 1056....35% off! Reading this forum can save you money and help you make the right choices at the audio shop:T Russ

In other words, don't let your experience with the RSX 1056 push you away from Rotel amps. The RSX 1057 is fine. Rotels and B&Ws sound great together, especially the 600 and 700 series. Russ

Talked to my dealer last night, he is trying to get my 1056 replaced. So if this gets done I should be fine for couple of years while i save up for 804s and probably going to go with Arcam or if lucky enought Classe (I am from Montreal

Thanks for great support. I will be in touch and let you know how it goes!

Better than the Classe SSP 600 (or 60?), Mark levinson #40, Halcro SSP100,
Lexicon, Parasound? I find that hard to believe. If you're happy with rotel thats great but you need to get off the "Rotel makes the best products" train. Just look at their quality control.

Spoke to the owner of the store, he is trying to convince me to bring it back, and they will send my reciever back to boston to fix! This will the the second time! And if they dont he will take it back and give me 1057. I mean this is getting rediculous already
