    B&W 600 series - value for money

    Hello all

Just wanted to say that IMHO the 600 series 3 standmount speakers are the best value speakers out there. They may not be the most fashionable speakers out there (I think the drivers look great though) but sound per pound, can they be beaten?

I first bought a pair of 600s3 speakers to compliment my Denon all-in-one system and perched them on a pair of stands. I could not believe how accurate they were with vocals and mid frequencies. Of course the bass on the little rear ported speakers is not great, BUT when set into the corners of my room i had never heard such quaslity from a budget/small speaker.

I knew then that B&W speakers were class.

I then proceeded to buy the 601s3 and smaller of the two centre channels for my AV set up. I tested speakers from Acoustic enregy, KEF, wharfdale, quad (11?) etc. I could not belive how good the B&W speakers were.

I found the 601 speakers had a larger soundstage than the 600, and the bass went a bit lower. I really wanted the 602 speakers (I wanted the best I could afford), however they sounded good in the demo room, but not so good in my 3 x 4 meter lounge. (i have my speakers 30 inches from room boundaries - but the 602s seemed to BOOM at certain frequencies ), strangely when i connected my REL sub for both LFE and hi-level stereo listneing the boom went away? I suppose letting a mid range speaker left to produce mid range AND a 10" speaker producing >60hz is better than a compromised mid range speaker producing bass?

I use a Cyrus CD7Q and C7 amp to my 601 speakers. Maybe a bit overkill BUT the 601s3 speakers seem up to the job. I have tried speakers now 2/3 times the price and i still prefer my 601's. Maybe i have just got used to the sound, but if it stops me spending any more money then thats great!

Incidently I found using 601S3 speakers, stands and a good sub was better and cheaper than buying the 604 speakers, I found that the sub was easy to integrate and goes far lower

I have tried the 700 series standmounts, and was impressed by their accuracy, but could not justify their expence over the 600 series.

    I am a happy customer

PS - Bi wiring worked for me!

    Hi,

I've just recently made the upgrade from 600 to 700 series speakers, interestingly yours is the second post I've read in recent days that questions the performance benefits of the costlier series. I must say my experience has been that there is a remarkable improvement in some regards, but critically, midrange performance (weaker on my 704's than the 603's before them) is not one of them. So, I agree the 600 series pretty much knocks most of what's on the market at similar cost out of the park.

    Enjoy your speakers.

      cheers BTB

I have to say that the 7 series standmounts sounded better integrated (highs, lows and mids and had better imaging) than the 6 seies but i agree that the mid range on the 6 series is sublime. female vocals and acoustic guitars etc, nothing compared for the price. Ironicaly i find the 6 series has a slightly recessed mid range with a slightly overconfident treble, but i find that i prefer the sound of this to an AGRESSIVE mid range and no top end.

Build quality of the 7 series is great. the 6 series is built well but uses far cheaper materials. I dont know how much difference the cabinet makes to the final cost of the speaker?

Mind you...your 704's look lovely on the website!!

I love the look of the new small CM1 speaker. How would these £500 speakers compare with my £250 601S3 speakers? (I will still be using a sub for low frequencies)

        Hi Steve

Firstly, welcome to the forum, I noticed these appear to be your 1st and 2nd posts respectively. I've only joined recently myself, but it's been good fun so far.

Just a question. Are you just getting into perfectionist audio or been at it for a while now?

          Not really very long.

Bought my first hi fi in 2003, Bought another seperate system and AV set up in 2004. Bought nothing this year so far!

I like the 'tweaking' apect to hi-fi. Trying to get 'something for nothing' is good fun - speaker placement, isolation etc.

I dont think i am going to get much improvements on my gear without spending more money. I think apart from buying some Grado headphones... i am about finished now.

Does anyone have a graph showing the roll off characteristics of the B&W601 S3 speaker? I am tweaking the integration of my sub at the moment. The specs say 60hz +/-3db. too my ears they are rolling off quite dramaically at 70 - 75. Should I put more ballast in my stands?

          Cheers

Emotiva UMC-1 & XPA-5 good match for 600/CM series speakers?
            by nirvana_1911
As title says, is the Emotiva UMC-1 & XPA-5 a good match for 600/CM series speakers for the price?
I have a Pioneer VSX-LX52, it was around $1,899AUD MSRP and considering upgrading to the Emotiva gear above, which will cost a similar price.
My thoughts are, is there any 7.1 pre-amp/processor...

            Powering 600 Series
            by marano
I'm currently contemplating between the 300 (4 x DM303, LCR3, ASW300) and 600 series (2 x 601s3, 2x 600s3, LCR60, ASW600) for movies and I'm starting to think that it may be worth the extra $500 to move up to the 600 series (this would pretty much top out my speaker budget) but I'm concerned that my...

            Hi everyone,
I'm a new user here but have been lurking since 2007 before I bought my 600 series speakers. This has always seemed like a very civil group and I thank you all for that! With that in mind, please understand that I am not looking to get into any arguments on this topic.
