Bi-amp or big amp for 703s

I recently bought some b&W 703 speakers. I stretched my budget
a bit, but I think I'll be happy with these.

I'm currently driving them with an adcom 535 amp. Rated 60w
per channel. It is a good solid 60w but may be not enough for the 703.

I don't have much budget left, and don't want to get in debt.
The problem is the 703 are less effecient than my old speakers.
When I turn them up the distortion lights lite up on my little 535.
I don't like that. My old speakers would distort before the amp did,
my new speakers are the other way around.

Clearly I need more power for these speakers for the occasional
times I want to crank them up.

One option is to buy another adcom 535 and use it to passively
biamp the 703's (my thinking is I'd use one amp for the right
channel and another for the left). This would get me 120 watts
per channel, which might be enough. The 535 is old enough
that they can be picked up pretty inexpensively (probably
around $150-200, maybe less if I was lucky).

Another option is to buy a midrange 200w/channel amp used.
Something like an adcom 555, 5550, 5800 or rotel 1080.
This would cost me around $600-800, which I don't have
    right now.

The third altenative is to wait even longer and buy a an
even more capable amp (krell, classe, etc) for more than
I spent on my speakers. Not sure if that makes sense. . .

So what do people think? Is one big amp better, or,
is pasively biamping using two smaller amps a good
    alternative.

I have 703's and a Rotel 1080 and am very pleased.
I found the 1080 to be a good deal when I was looking.
I am not sure you can get good quality bang for the buck any cheaper than the 1080.

      Hi dknightd,
I recommend waiting to get the best amp you can afford. The Adcom 535 is a good amp, I have one for my CDM1 nt's, but it is not enough from the 703's. The FST midrange needs a lot of power. Check the used market for some good deals. I use a Krell Kav250a for my CDM7nt's and it really brings them to life.

Another option is to check out the Behringer A500 at partexpress.com. I have heard very good things about this amp. 160 x 2 at 8ohms. 500 bridged mono. Not bad for $180 shipped new. I may upgrade to this from my Adcom 535.

Passive bi-amping will not do it for you.

And it is not going to give you 120 wpc. It will give you 60 for bass and 60 for the rest.

        Save and go bigger.

OK, thanks everybody. Big amp it is. Now we'll see if I get
something in the adcom 5500/rotel 1080 class, or if I can
hold out a little longer for something a step up. . .
Or maybe I should find out more about that cheap Beringer.

You never read much about people using adcom amps with
B&W speakers. While the rotel 1080 almost seems to be
designed to pair with the 703s.

I recommend the Rotel RB-1080 amp for the 703's

I just helped a friend connect a Rotel RB-1080 amplifier and Rotel RC-1090 preamplifier to his B&W 703's. He was using a 100W integrated amp. The RC-1090 preamplifier is excellent, though more expensive than the RC-1070. We used XLR balanced cables for the best sound. The unbalanced cables were close behind but not as clear of sound.

The 1080 woke up the speakers. The bass, midrange, and treble were all stronger. The amp has control of the speakers and produces clean clear sound.

Just wanted to let you know that I am using an Adcom 555 11 amp with my 804S and they sound excellent. You cannot beat the price of around 400 for a 200 watt per channel stereo amp. I also spent two hundred to get the insides upgraded and it made a huge difference.

                Trevor,
I'm curious, what did you have upgraded on its insides? And who did it?

Help - Best Adcom HT Amp Wiring to HTM2 ?
                  by yyz
I recently purchased an Adcom GFA6000 amp with Ace615 line conditioner.
The 6000 is primarily designed for home theater with three (L+C+R) 100w and two (L+R surr) amp sections.

I already have an Adcom GFA555II driving my main L+R channels so the 6000 is purely for my HT speakers....

                  Amp help!
                  by rtu0894
A quick question for someone willing to answer. Wanting to upgrade slightly but can't decide. Now I'm running adcom 565 pre amp, adcom 555II amp and infinity kappa 9's. What would be the better choice: Two adcom 565 monoblocks or a Rotel RB 1090? any help?

How many ampheres do the 1095 & 1080 draw?
                  by UCLAman
Anyone know how many ampheres the 1095 and 1080 are drawing? I looked in the manual and on the back of each amp. and still could not find it - unless I missed it. I ask cause I am in the process of upgrading the power cables. Its not over 15 amps for the 1095, is it? 8O

                  Thanks,

My 1st B&W Speakers and got some questions
                  by AudioAddict
                  Hello,

I'm new owner of B&W 604 S3 speakers connected to B&K Components PT5 / ST 125.2 Amp. I know for most of you 600 series is pretty much low/mid range but I couldn't afford 800 series, and so far I think they are awesome. OK, enough of going out of topic. My first question...
