B&W distortion on Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”?

I’d like to know if any of you, specifically Nautilus 805 or 805S owners, could try the following: Play the start of track 6, Just Another Movie, on Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. There’s some sort of drum effect, a pause, then the same effect is repeated.

What is the cone of the driver doing during these first two bits?

You don’t need to pump the volume on this, just dial it to an easy listening setting.

Owners of B&W speakers other than the 805 models can give it a try too.

Thanks for changing that topic heading Mr. Moderator. Can't have people thinking B&W speakers distort per se, now can we?

I am blown away by the over-agressive moderating in this forum.

You realize, Josh, that your comment is off-topic and could get this thread locked.

The same applies to my response.

Here's to keeping it legal and its nose wiped: BUMP!

Pieter, what are your woofers doing in that song passage that you mentioned?

Robert, the cones resonate, something like a "RRRRRRTTTTT" sound.

Was anybody able to give this a try?

I'm willing to bet that all and any incarnations of the 805 speakers cannot play the start of this track...

And I have my doubts regarding the ability of 804 and 803 speakers too.

Maybe that is the exact resonant frequency of Kevlar.

I think that the speaker is "bottoming" out (if that is a word??). I had my old HTM2 do the same thing when we were watching Shrek 2. Was it played at high volume?

Nope, it happens at low volume setting too. One can hardly see the cones moving.

Played with the crossover setting on my Bryston SP 1.7 all the way up to 220Hz, feeding the 805s the high pass. Still distorts on the Nautilus 805 and 805S.

Can't say I notice anything on other material, thus was hoping that anyone that has "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" and B&W speakers would give this a try.

Robert, please don't buy it for my sake, especially if you're not into Pink Floyd.

I checked it out it does happen but only at low volume. I have the new 804S, when I turned it up to a good medium high volume no strange distortion sound almost a sick buzz? Could be something in the recording. Kind of off subject I like Pink Floyd but can't find any music like them. Does anyone know of some great music like Pink Floyd? Thanks.

Sort of pushing a car through a speed band where your dash is rattling? I think it is masked at higher volumes, but it is still there on my 805s.

Think so too. Just the way the sound adds up in the mix to hit those driver cones where they hurt.

Roger Waters' solo albums, but you probably have those already. Other than that, no other group/individual I can think of; pretty unique stuff.

Might I suggest... more Pink Floyd!

It is rumored that this fall "Wish You Were Here" is being released on SACD and their 1995 concert tour "Pulse" is being released on DVD-V. (I previously owned their concert "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" on VHS and it was phenomenal.)

Here are links to the existing CD versions so you can see the song list...

Pieter, I get a buzzing sound too, like a tinny transistor radio being played too loud. I also get it on my headphones so I presume it's a fault (or a special effect perhaps?) recorded onto the track.

I have finally downloaded the track and tried it. I get the sound even on my PC speakers - hard to hear at soft volumes - but weird and buzzing and resonant at lounder volumes... So I too think it is just a unusual recorded sound...

Had Caleb try it out on his Nautilus 802s when I was in Cape Town, and it is there too.

That it's in the recording is a conlusion I'm happy to live with.
