Lifting veil - 2 prong to 3 prong

Why did switching out all the 2 prong power cord that came with the receiver with a 3 prong regular cord of the same guage make my audio system come alive as if a sheer veil being lifted?

Well, assuming the cords are of equal quality, perhaps grounding the chassis helped to reduce the noise floor by absorbing some of the internal interference.

I'm surprised, if the chassis is grounded to the IEC connector, that the receiver didn't come with a 3 prong cord to begin with. Does the connector on the receiver have 3 prongs?

Yes the IEC connector has three prongs. The power cord however had a polarized plug.

The power cable I used is a standard 6 feet 3-prong 14 ga computer cable costing $4.00.

Interesting. One way to prove if it's the cable itself or the grounding that caused the change is to temporarily insert a cheater plug and see if the "veil" reappears. If it does, then the receiver performs better when grounded (and is safer to use, too). If not, then there is another cause, perhaps something to do with the cable itself.

Converting 2 prong AC cord equipment to IEC?
          by DIY_newbie
I have several pieces of audio equipment that have 2 prong no ground ac plugs. is it possible to convert this equipment to a 3 prong AC cord by adding an IEC socket, or hardwireing 3 conductor AC wire with a 3 prong plug?

Is this a good idea? Any reason why this would cause the sound...

          1066 Power cord replacement
          by Ron Reda
Based on some discussion in another thread, I went ahead and ordered a VH Audio Flavor 3 power cord to replace the stock cord that came with the 1066 pre/pro. However, when it arrived today, I noticed that the cord had a three-prong female receptacle with a three-prong male receptacle versus a two-prong...

          Power Cord Question
          by BWLover
So I got an RLC-1040 and the power cord that came with it was maybe 2 feet :M (on a good day). So I switched it with the power cord on my RB-1080. They were both 14AWG cords but the 1080's was 6 feet (long enough for my RLC-1040). Now the 2 foot cord is to short to be used on my amp. So now the cord...

          Upgrade Power Cord for RB-1070?
          by Russ L
The RB-1070 only has a 2 prong female outlet for the power cord (while the RB-1080 has a 3 prong). If I want to upgrade my power cable does anyone know a brand that supplies a cable that will fit? I've searched everywhere to no luck. I hope Doug doesn't mind the question since he doesn't sell power...
