Oppo says it will be introducing a new lower priced blu-ray player in January 2010. Since I have no use for all the extra features of the 83, I will be eager to see what this lower priced unit has to offer. They will have to cut out many features. Just hope they don't take away the Anchor Bay chip. Anyway, they used twitter to make the announcement. It's here:

George, that'd be a great unit for people that just want the stellar Blu-Ray/DVD performance and don't care about the rest of the 83's options. :T.

Yeah, I see those going for sure. But the loss of the Anchor Bay chip would be a deal killer for many as it does a marvelous job on standard dvd upconversion according to owners of the 83.Originally posted by Chris DI could easily see dropping SACD/DVD-A, as the vast majority of users will not need those.- Bottom

I think it would be difficult to come in under $200 with the ABT. If you look at their last DVD player to include ABT, even it was over $300.Santino

I wouldn't worry about that, dan. Since this new product will almost certainly be a step down in performance and features to save money, you'll still have the superior product.

Well yeah...but depending on what the lost features are they wouldn't affect me too much. I don't really 'need' SACD and DVD-Audio playback (I have only a handful of relevant disks) and I'll never want to stream any movies over the ethernet nor will I play digital files off a thumb drive.Originally posted by Chris DI wouldn't worry about that, dan. I mostly just wanted a good CD/DVD/BD player....the other stuff just came with it.- Danny- Bottom

Well the 83 is $529 in Canada and I have had it in my sights as my next Blu-ray player so $300 or $350 wouldn't bother me to have the Anchor Bay chip included and drop all those other features I don't want or need.Originally posted by littlesaintI think it would be difficult to come in under $200 with the ABT. by Joe FaganTried to play my first BluRay disc tonight and am having problems. The BluRay disc is the current Star Trek movie. The Oppo BD BluRay displays True DD. The 1570 displays Dolby HD Dmix 48k with subscript showing only the FL FR and SW playing. When I turn 1570 off and then on again that first display...-
