I've had my Oppo BDP-83 since June. Sadly, I haven't used it as a CD player yet. But, I will definitely check these settings out tonight.
As far as the beta firmware releases go, I've only had an iffy experience with a beta in July (after all, it's a beta). Luckily, every firmware install is considered an upgrade by the player regardless of version number.- Bottom

If you press the volume button it will show where the level is. They recommend it to be at full 100. Since I am bitstreaming my DVD's to my Rotel, the rotel decodes the audio and hence I was not having an issue with Bluray audio but the CD is decoded by the BDP 83 and I had the audio preset at 10 or 15( must have sat on the remote or something). When I upped it to 100 the audio signal obviously boosted and solved my issues. Now the volume is at 60 and the loudness is enough and I of course have a lot of room to go. Hope this helps.

BDP-83 rules why bother with DVD!
Now they need to make a BDP-84 upscale with the following features
- Wireless
- Advanced AL32 Processing Multi-Channel
- 32 bit/192 kHz D/A Converters
- Slot loading disc so there are no moving parts
- If still a caddy they should make it in aluminum (like Proceed use to do)
- Balanced out put
If you want a great Blu Ray/ SACD/ CD for experiencing great surround sound here you are:

Well I finally broke down and jumped on the Blu-Ray wagon. Based on all the glowing reviews and posts here and elsewhere, ordered the Oppo BDP-83...should be here today. It will replace a Denon 2900 universal player. While I'm pretty confident video performance will be a significant upgrade, I'm wondering how the audio performance will compare to the Denon when playing DVD-A and SACD's. I've been a fan of both formats since their inception...guess I was the only one based on their market performance...and having that audio capability was the reason I went with the Oppo as opposed to a stand alone Blu-Ray player. Any impressions from current owners on SACD/DVDA playback from the Oppo?
As I audition the Oppo this weekend, I'll post some first impressions of my own. Can't wait to pop in Al DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy SACD....

Brad...question... I've spent some time this afternoon reading the owners manual on line so when I get home I can set the Oppo up asap. In the Audio Format Setup menu, SACD Output, should I set to DSD? I'm going with the multichannel analog out from the player to the multichannel in's on a Rotel 1068 (no hdmi).

I believe DSD is only applicable if you're sending via HDMI to a receiver/processor that can accept it. If you're using analog outs, the Oppo has to convert to PCM anyway, so the choice is moot.Originally posted by rdramJust ordered both today!

The multi-channel DAC in the Oppo handles DSD. However, I don't believe any bass management or delay is applied to DSD, so if you need that, you need to use PCM anyway. For $299.00 plus one way shipping. A limited time offer for 1st generation owners (Dec.31st.2009) I will jump on this one too.
May even get the NuForce upgrade after the comparisons are out, but for now the $299.00 offer seems like a good deal just going off of reviews of the ESS-DAC alone.
My CD player is a Rotel RCD-1072, it will be interesting to do a shootout on the two, especially since they are comparing the analogue SQ to players costing up to $2,500.00- Bottom

I wouldn't bother upgrading. Just continue to use the BDP83 as a transport and use the DAC's in the SSP800 over HDMI.Originally posted by GumpIs this a worthwhile upgrade if I currently have my BDP83 connected to my Classe SSP-800 processor via HDMI? Should I expect better sound using the upgraded BDP83 SE analog connections?

Santa bought (I wish) us a new Oppo BDP-83 Nuforce Edition player. It has very nice sonics. Without getting too subjective there is just more there, there. We are just using it for 2 channel playback, and we wanted a nice sounding player that could play everything which it does.

I've read reviews on the Oppo's sound and it was described has having very good sound quality for it's price. The first unit we got from NuForce had a noise problem, but we returned it and they quickly sent us out a new one, which is just fantastic. Don't know who was responsible for the problem though, NuForce or Oppo.
We don't use multichannel but you can set up the front speaker type/response in the menu. Like the size of the front channels. You might want to limit the extension of the front channels by setting them to small. Well, just guessing, since I forgot what the actual designation is for the front speaker types are.
Don't know what would account for the brightness. Sorry I'm surely not much help.John

One thing I don't understand is why this boost needs to be applied. I mean once calibration is achieved with pink noise, then wouldn’t the levels be correct unless I'm missing something.
