DLP RPTV's with 1280X720P light engines have been released by Mitsubishi and announced by others; the pricing has been in relatively stratospheric turf (over $10 in most cases; the Mit's listed for around 12K, if my memory serves me right). Unfortunately, according to reviewers, these sets have had a number of problems, ranging from rather problematic behavior with the scalers, to fairly indifferent color accuracy and uniformity.

IOW, not quite ready for prime time, compared with recent FPTV DLP releases like the newest Sharp 9000.

The other RPTV DLP configuration conisdered a possiblity at lower cost is using the 848X600 light engine in the 848X480P mode, this is appearing in a few DLP front projectors at the 3K price point, but with the larger cabinet, fresnel lens, etc., required of an RPTV, I'd expect them to debut at about $4K. This will be a good setup for DVD, but it obviously won't be HD ready unless down coversion to 480P is your thing.

A friend said he just saw a new Sony RPTV which sounds like it uses the light engine of the 11T; it listed for $7995.

    Best regards,

    Jon

Another DLP RPTV which was reviewed last year was the Panasonic PT-52DL10. It's a 52" diagonal set, 16:9 aspect ratio, rated resoultion 1280X720. MSRP is $12,999.

It was reviewed by Home Theater magazine, though they elected not to post the color temperature measurements, because they were concerned whether their Philips analyzer would produce reliable readings with it- and the readings they got were pretty bad. Though it has three color temperature settings, including one which is supposed to be D6500, all were strongly blue shifted.

Additionally, the scaler on this set also had problems, putting noise in many parts of the picture not in the original source, and doing a poor job with small regulator geometric shapes (like circles), producing a pixelated look. This sounds similar to what my early generation NEC flat panel display does with resoultions not at it's native pitch; on the otherhand, Samsung and Sylvania displays of recent manufacture have fairly good interpolation and produce a very usable image even when scaling 1024X768 to 1280X1024.

In an image test using the "Dark City" DVD, the Panaonic was unable to resolve detail in many image areas where a Princeton Graphics 27" monitor revealed a considerable amount of image detail- even though nominally lower in resolution. The conclusion was a combination of problems with black levels, gamma, and scaling.

On High def pictures it delivered an image less noisy than NTSC, but not as clean as most other sets- including much lower cost Panasonic RPTV's.

It's amazing to me that a manufacturer would release a product in this poor a state of development at such a high price- clearly, many LCD only FPTVs can best it's performance, as models from Sanyo, Sony, Hitachi, and others at least come with fairly decent scalers and accurate color temperature setup for D6500. But, as I understand it, manufacturers like Pansonic and Mitsubishi are basically at the mercy of TI's DLP engine; there's not much tweaking they can do themselves. Or so they say.

      Regards,

      Jon

DLP has come a long way in Front Projection, but they haven't got it right yet for RPTV, at least according to what I have read.
