Is HDTV Important To You ?

If ( and I say that smilingly) HDTV ever becomes readily available in Canada (or elsewhere for that matter)I may start to show some interest. But to be honest, I rarely watch tv fare. I like Biography, Larry King Live, and some stuff on the Discovery channel, but I doubt if I spend more than 3 or 4 hours a week on the tube. I would rather see High Definition DVD than tv.The big screen movie experience is what I live for in my HT these days. How 'bout you fellow HTG members ?Is HDTV important to you ?

well in a round about way it is important to me. Really I don't see myself going hif def for some time but if they continue to push it the prices of widescreen TV's will continue to drop and they'll become more adordable so yes I'm all for the push

Well, prior to DirecTV's HD offerings, there was no HD in my area. So, it was like why get excited over this if I can't have it?

Now that we do have that option, sure it's tempting, but the dollars and cents just don't add up. So, for me, it looks like I will be waiting until my current RPTV goes down, or I come into a large sum of cash one, lol.

HDTV (at this stage) is like DTS when it first hit the streets. And as an early adopter, I recall loving the sound and for two years being pissed as hell for the lack of DVD software (though I did have my laserdisc :B)! Then when DTS became mainstream, they cut the Bit rate!!!

Hopefully, HDTV will too become mainstream (soon) and allow everyone to benefit from what it offers. For now, for me, there isn't enough to get excited about.

What they should do is stop using the "movie filter" on the final versions of the film/transfer.... Shazam, instant Hi-Def movies... :B heheh

HDTV is a nice idea, but as you've pointed out Canada doesn't get much. I think we get the demo channel? So being able to receive HDTV is not a big deal, check back in 10 years. But as Andrew has pointed out, it will continue to drop prices on these sets, so that's a good thing. Progressive scan, 16:9 73" set, drooll.

In Oklahoma? Hell, I might as well be in Canada:M Hopefully this will improve as my RPTV slush funds gains momentum through next spring (I'm planning this one way out). I'm only excited about the DVD capabilities so far.

What's more important to me is a decent price on a 16:9 with an excellent line doubler.

But it will be a couple of years before I can afford one.

I like Myriad's stand on "progressive scan". That it should be done in the video output device, not in the DVD player. So for me, that is 16:9 with a built-in Faroudja (or similar) de-interlacer. Why put it in the DVD player instead of the TV?

Is it important too me? Naaaaaa...but, i do enjoy what little i do receive. When i bought my Mit's 46807 back in January, i switched to satellie from cable. I went with Dish network because it was cheaper. Turns out, ya get HBO HD AND ShowTime HD... i definately enjoy StarGate SG1 on ShowTime in full blown 16:9 high def. Overall,it could be better but, i don't get upset over the little bit of content offered... my HT is so much more too me. I thoroughly enjoy all of it.

At this time it doesn't matter because we have no programming here. I thought about Directv, but with one HBO channel and nothing else, no way I'm buying the reciever. When they get 4 or 5 channels of programming I'll buy.

I am just getting my feet wet into HDTV. Just have to get that signal locked in.... 30 just doesn't do it.

How soon before more programming is offered besides HBO and the demo channel?

The Cubs-Rockies game in HD was pretty spectacular Tuesday as was The Final 4, the Masters, The Superbowl, The NFL Playoffs and Thanksgiving Football, as well as the U.S. Open

I expect the CBS College games will shine as well this year with the other sporting events like Mark Cubans HD sporting channel rumored to be on DirecTv in a couple months.

The HD summer concerts including Yes, Peter Frampton, Barry Mannilow, Paul McCartney, and Stone Temple Pilots were pretty amazing.

CBS is about 75% HD and ABC claims to be catching up at the start of the new season but the real treat is PBS and their awesome specials in HD.

HD is very important to me because the programming thats HD as of now is my type of programming Sports/ Movies/ Educational but just as important is watching DVDs progressive on a widescreen set

Yes HDTV is important to me if I said no my wife would kill me for buying one a little over a year and a half ago. The programming available has been slowly creeping up with CBS leading the way. I must say that sports in HDTV once seen will make the prices a little easier to swallow. Just the other day I watched my first HDTV baseball game on Dishes HDTV demo loop channel and was really impressed.
The encryption news of DVI has me a little worried but hopefully TV manufactors and Dish and Direct want leave their orginal HDTV customers out in the cold.

I guess this is the main benefit, at 1080i, the picture become very clear. I've seen some demos on some HDTV sets and on FPTV setups. So yes the demo material is really...

I don't know squat about scalers and doublers but this looks like it might could do some good, especially with cable and satellite sources. Price sounds very reasonable at ~$600. Expected release date in September 2003.

                            Is it possible?
