    HDTV clears important tech hurdle

    News from Audiorevolution .com

The most important development from the agreement today seems to be that the need for an external HDTV receiver box will likely disappear. Currently, you need an expensive (most are $700 or more) and very quirky AV component to receive both cable and terrestrial HDTV. With restrictions lifted, consumers will soon be able to connect HDTV sources directly into their sets and/or high bandwidth AV receivers. With big-screen HDTV prices currently below $2,000, the removal of an additional $700 receiver brings HDTV much closer to the masses.

I'm a little confused by this.

Does this mean we will not need an HDTV tuner?

Would this mean the HDTV signal would not need to be decoded?

If it's what I think it means then this is definitely great news.

      Found another article on this:

At Yahoo Finance, you get free stock quotes, up-to-date news, portfolio management resources, international market data, social interaction and mortgage rates that help you manage your financial life.

Sounds like it might be somehow linked to cable TV only. Maybe I'm still confused.

I didn't think cable could even handle the bandwidth of HDTV. I am really confused. :?:

The bandwidth for cable is 30Mbs per channel
The bandwidth for over air HDTV is 18.9Mbs per channel (1 to 4/5 sub channels )

You can't get a HDTV signal, picture full-res or not, without a HDTV decoder/tuner external box or built-in.

"Television set makers and U.S. cable operators reached a peace accord on Thursday to allow digital cable signals to be directly piped into television sets without extra equipment, clearing a major hurdle in the transition to digital television."

set-top boxes to read the signals ie Cable boxes

"sales though they cautioned that new cable-ready sets would not be available until 2004"

think of it as Cable Ready 2.0.

COX cable here in Phoenix has HDTV available but you have to buy there box for 500 big ones.

We were also of the thinking that CATV systems could not carry HDTV signals but aparentyl they do. Granted right now they only support 5 or six channels and none of the local's. How stupid is that but they do have HDTV and it looks pretty good. I still think it is better off the dish but thats me.
