I very much dislike Sony, for a plethora of reasons.
The guys running Sony are morons. Sure seems like they are all prepared to, make the exact same mistakes, as they have with Beta and Super Audio CD.
Combine that with Sony's shabby and shoddy quality control and product design of the last decade or so, and I have a difficult time supporting a company like that.
Not to mention this whole malicious CD-copy protection garbage and the damage done to consumers computers/hardware. The lawsuit and settlement was so very appropriate and for once, the hands of justice had their day.
Sadly, I am of the opinion that Blu-Ray would be the best of the HD formats, because of it's flexibility (storage space). But I am reluctant to spend a thin dime on any Sony hardware or software. And Sony just keeps on making bonehead decisions, laughable judgements and pulling more dumb moves, every other day.
I mean, how could a company be putting so much effort, research, developement and money into creating a new HD format like Blu-Ray; and then have the arrogance and stupidity to release several mindbogglingly bad tranfers on this new HD format? Stupid. Plain stupid.
It's going to take a lot to get me to support Sony's Blu-Ray.
HD-DVD seems like just another patchwork format, until something else comes along; in ten years.
Maybe I won't support either one.Tony- Bottom

It seems like this is a half-baked effort to make Sony appear as a socially responsible company. Remember that someone recently posted that the porn industry chose to support HD-DVD. So what does Sony do? "Oh, well if we get the word out that we are actually blocking it from being on Blu-Ray, we look like a moral company." Or something like that. Maybe. I didn't know they blocked it from beta as well, so maybe that influenced the porn industry's choice to support HD-DVD.- Bottom

Actually in the announcement that the industry is going the HD-DVD route the Sony ban was one of the justifications they gave. Sony isn't doing it as CYA, just like with the VHS vs. Beta issue back in the day.
It was a much larger deal back then, as at the time the only way to get porn video was to go to a movie theater, or have projection equipment at home and a source to get films from. Moving to VHS allowed you to see your naughty movies in your own home without the embarrassment of someone seeing you go to a theater.
Nowadays since we already have DVD, VHS, and the internet, while the porn industry backing HD-DVD is significant, it is not a make or break kind of deal like it was previously.- Bottom

YES, I heard that the porn Industry have selected HD-DVD format ,just like they chose VHS back then. They want cheap products so that everyone will buy. :W That sucks for us audiophile that don't mind spending a little more for excellent quality. My 2 cents !!

While BD has more capacity technically, both formats use the same video and audio codecs/compression etc so really the "quality" has the capacity to be equal in either format.Originally posted by chinetsWhatever the format will be whether HD-DVD or BLUE RAY !! I agree for the most part, although capacity is still important, but not nearly as much so as some make it out to be. Extra capacity may mean that we never have to flip a disc on extra long movies, those of us who enjoy TV series on DVD will find more episodes per disc. Also who knows how things will mature, high bit-rate audio/video requires more space (obviously), although I imagine as things mature the bit rate will go down for a given quality (or remain the same with a boost in quality). While BD has more capacity technically, both formats use the same video and audio codecs/compression etc so really the "quality" has the capacity to be equal in either format.
Also, maybe you guys don't remember, but there was plenty of porn available for Beta.- Bottom

Considering the outright numbers that industry has I'd say that quite a few of our members here at HTG know what is and isn't available (just by going from a strictly stastical side of things).
It's been about a year or so since I've been in one of those types of stores, the #1 format then was still VHS (at least judging by the selection available).- Bottom
