I've read in many places that this DVD player can upconvert to 1080i through component cables. This is important for me because my HDTV does not have a DVI input. Zenith's website shows "component input(1080i)" on there spec sheet. I was ready to buy when I noticed bestbuy.com says, "note - upconversion through DVI input only." I've emailed Zenith and gotten no response. Is this something they have changed in the life of this model? Can anyone tell me where I can get one that does upconvert through component. If not, are there other DVD players out there that do? Thanks in advance. 8)

I have one and yes it certainly scales to 1080i through the component outputs.
BUT it's certainly possible that newest versions have that feature crippled in the firmware.
Zenith certainly isn't going to respond to that email, since 1080i over component is technically illegal.
If Bestbuy.com has them then so do the stores. An in home audition might be in order.

Unfortunately none of my local Best Buy stores carry it.
I decided to call Zenith to see if they could straighten the matter up for me. The lady I talked to looked it up in her system and she said it shows it being upconverted through components, so they should all do it. I didn't really get the impression she really knew what she was talking about though.
The only place I've found to purchase one that actually claims that it infact does component upconverting is ebay. I was curious because there are a couple of them on there that again stated "Upconverting through DVI output only!!!" I emailed one of those sellers and the response that I got was:
Dear Customer,
We don't know the build date, so we don't know if we have units available
upscaling thr componet or not.
That is the reason we can only gurrantee DVI upscaling.
They are all refurbished on ebay so I wonder how some can claim it does the upconverting and others say they cannot. Makes me a little leary.- Bottom

Part of the DVD licensure agreement prohibits the manfacturing of players that upscale through the component outputs. How do you mean?
I think we covered most aspects of the 318 in THIS Thread

Thanks, that was greatly helpful reading. :T So I guess I'm looking for a player with a build date previous to July 04. I gathered from that thread that if I end up with one that has a later buile date that I can also upgrade the firmware. Is that something you would recommend? Can't say that I really know anything about firmware.- Bottom

I thought I read somewhere that if you upgrade the firmware it will disable the upconversion over component. I wonder if there is a way to downgrade the firmware so it will work with a post- 4/04 build date?- Bottom
