    Top Gun:Maverick - loved it!

I finally spun my BD copy of Top Gun:Maverick last night, and really enjoyed it, even more than the original.

The story was interesting, the SFX were great, pic and sound quality were great, and they included some of the classic Harold Faltermeyer score from the original, along with a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle references to the original movie.

On top of that, this is the first disc I own with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Though, when I watched it last night, all my preamp showed was "7-channel PCM". This morning I found a setting on my BD player to tell it to mix BD interactive audio, which was causing it to decode the soundtrack and stream it, so I turned that off, and in a test spin of Maverick, I got Atmos.

I highly recommend this, especially if you enjoyed the original.

    Look ma, Atmos!

I watched the 4k version 2x with no Atmos and 5.1. I enjoyed it both times and loved the video quality. Now I'm going to have to note to check my bluray player when I get home to see if there is any setting like that on mine. I have wired the room for Atmos, but still waiting for a good DIY build for the ceiling Atmos speakers. It was a great film and I could still watch it third or fourth time and when I get Atmos some day certainly I will watch it again.

I don't have the extra Atmos speakers either, but at least I can play the Atmos tracks on my system now. Probably doesn't sound much different than the 5.1/7.1 without the added speakers, but for bragging rights, it's there.

Even without Atmos, you can look at your A/V receiver/preamp to see what kind of bitstream it's receiving. If you see "Dolby TruHD", "DTS-HD" etc. that matches the disc you're playing, it should stream Atmos as well. If you're seeing some variant of PCM, check your settings.

I have some UHD discs with Atmos, but no player to play them, and the BD copy doesn't have Atmos... if only that $7 Goodwill buy actually had the player labeled on the box in the box... lol.

I still haven't seen this, though I only hear good things about the movie and sound effects. Need to try it out sometime.

Saw this in full 15/70 IMAX when it came out. I believe something close to 85% was shot with IMAX cameras, like many Christopher Nolan movies, so I decided to shell out for it. Glad the home release measures up.

I was chatting with a F18 pilot and he said it was done really well. So when they're pulling Gs, it's really like what was filmed.

Hey, thanks for the update! I didn't know it was out on BD yet, but glad to hear it is- will need to add it to the collection waiting on me getting the Epson projector setup again...

It's all about the deferred gratification, still... playing the long game.

For some reason this movie wasn't released as a dual UHD+BD package, so I had to buy just the BD. I'll have to rebuy if/when I upgrade to 4k gear.

Amazon had a 4k of the original and the new one:

I'm looking forward to this, have the 4K version, but it's in the "deferred gratification" bin until I get my projector setup in the AV Den (currently the IT Den)... probably going to be a while!

I suppose it's always good to have things to look forward to, but my life is ridiculous in that regard!
