    Just scored a free Oppo

Not a new one. A BDP 83. I'm helping a buddy put together a home cinema kit and he donated his BDP 83 to me as my "consultant fee". :T

It will replace my current DVD-A/SACD player and my blu-ray player and free up some space on my gear shelf. Looking forward to how it looks and sounds. And, of course, can't beat the price. :B

    Sweet!

    The 83's are nice, IMHO.
I tried like hell to find a used one before I got a cheap Sony BDPS3200.

Now, if I can only make it region free (at least for DVD), it can replace an additional player on the shelf.

I wish that happened to me more often when I help people with their equipment setup!!. Making the Oppo region free should be a relatively easy process. I googled it and there's plenty of hits on how to do it!. This unit does not have WiFi so I hope that you will connect it to the internet wired to do firmware updates?

Found a way to do it for both DVD and Blu-ray. Hardware mod, so firmware updates won't erase the mod. Costs about 100$ (a more than fair cost, considering the player is free--and a region-free current Oppo would run me about 7 times as much).

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.
