    DVD upgrade

I just bought a Panasonic 32in tube HDTV. My DVD player is a couple years old and is a Sony 5 disk DVD changer - NON progressive scan. It has an S-video output but not component video.

I think I need to upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player - agreed? I would love to keep it under $250 and was looking possibly at the Denon DVD 910. Any other suggestions?

Hi Brian and welcome to HTGuide.

I'm in the same exact situation. I'm looking to upgrade my non-progress Sony DVD changer. My budget is kind of tight too. I am currently looking at the Pioneer 563AS. Its able to decode DVD-A and SACD. It has recieved some good reviews and for $150 at Best Buy its seems like a good deal.

Good Luck with your search and please keep us updated on your progress.

Hi Brian, welcome to The Guide! :later:

With a 32 inch screen, depending on how close you sit for viewing you may well see some improvement with a progressive scan DVD. I'd recommend buying progressive regardless as you never know when you'll wind up with a larger screen where the difference will be VERY visible.

As far as what brands to look at: Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony and Denon all have reasonably priced entries that will give you a fine picture. Build quality and features are going to be the wild cards in judging what to buy. Do you watch more broadcast TV, HDTV, DVD's or what? That can make a difference in what model you choose.

I will be watching a fairly equal amount of STV, HDTV, and DVD's. I really want the picture on my DVD's to be impressive, though.

I've been running thru a number of models. I'm actually looking a the the Panasonic RP62 - the later models use the Genesis FLI2200 chip instead of the Faroudja, but its gotten good ratings nevertheless.

I've got a nice Denon receiver and Definitive Technology speakers and really want great sound. How concerned should I be with DVD Audio?

I would also recommend a decent progressive scan player in whatever price range you're looking at. Welcome to the Guide, Brian!

Eduardo, that's the least expensive universal player out there, so if you're looking to save a few bones, that's the way to go.

Ok, for starters, I wasn't really in the market for this piece when I bought it. I just went harmlessly to a private sale at a local A/V store, NOW Audio Video. While browsing at the store, I happened to see the DV-07, and it was a new product. The beauty of it, with the blue light in it, was...

RSP 1098 and progressive scan dvd/dvd audio players
            by Henk
The RSP 1098 TFT screen displays no video unless a usable signal is passed through the composite video connection. However, as pointed out in the RSP 1098 manual not all dvd players, set in progressive mode, output a usable composite video signal. This is true also for dvd players that play dvd audio....

            Hello,

I bought a Rotel system a couple of weeks ago and I’m very happy with it.

For all of my questions I searched the forum, but now I have a problem and I can’t find the solution on the forum…

Last week I bought cables to link my dvd-player 1060...

            Progressive Scan DVD Player
            by junior77blue
So, if my hitachi TV upcoverts all my signals into 1080i, what's the purpose of having a progressive scan DVD player?

Wouldn't it make more sense to 'feed' the TV with a raw signal as opposed to feeding it the progressive scan signal, and then having the TV upsample that once again....
